of the piano-case, said panel being provided at the lower end with a ledge for supporting the music, said ledge being guided by a center bracket and corner pieces of the panel and acted upon by a spring. For closing the panel, the ledge is forced in and retained by a suitable locking device, which is released when opening the panel and changes it into a rack by means of a suitable push-button or other releasing device.

In the drawings, A represents a panel ,which is hinged in any suitable manner at its upper edge to the front of an upright-piano case. At the lower edge of the panel is arranged a sliding ledge, B, which is equal in length with the panel and guided on the same by a grooved central guide-bracket, a, which engages a fixed tongued or dovetailed rail, I), of the ledge B. The sliding ledge B is further guided by its recessed ends in corner guide-pieces, d d, of the panel B, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to produce the even and steady motion of the sliding ledge B at the lower edge of the panel A. A strong band-spring, O, that is attached to a bracket at the rear of the panel A, presses on a projecting portion, 6, of the sliding ledge B, so as to move the latter forward when the panel is in open position. At the under side of the sliding ledge B is arranged a catch, f,

which is engaged by the hook-shaped end of a fulcrumed and springs-actuated lever, f, of

the piano-case, the lower arm of said lever being acted upon by a sliding button, f, which is located at the front part of the upright-piano case centrally below the panel A, and the shank of which is provided with astop-pin, f When the panel A is in closed position, the catch f of the sliding ledge B is engaged by the locking lever f, so that the front end of the ledgeB is flush with the molding of the panel A, and closes thereby the opening in the front of the piano-case, as shown in Fig. 4:.

For releasing the panel and changing itinto a music-rack, the button f 2 is depressed, so that the locking-lever is released from the catch of the ledge, which permits the forward motion of the ledge B by the action of the spring 0 and the forward swinging of the entire panel, so that the lid of the piano can be placed below the same for holdingit in inclined position and receiving the music, as shown in Fig. 4.

The pressure of the spring 0 supports the ledge B when in forward position, as shown in Fig. 3. For returning the panel into closed position, the lid is first closed, the panel returned into the opening of the case, and the ledge then pressed inwardly until it is engaged by the locking device, which holds the ledge and panel in closed position.

The hinged panel, sliding ledge, and the locking and releasing devices for the latter form a neat and readily-operated music-rack attachment for upright pianos, that can be quickly and easily placed in position for supporting the music or closed up so as to form a panel of the case.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of apanel hinged to the front of a piano-case, a sliding and spring-actuated ledge guided at the lower end of said panel, means for locking the ledge and panel in closed position, and means for releasing said ledge and panel, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of a panel hinged at its upper end to the front of a piano-case, a sliding ledge guided at the lower end of said panel, and aspring attached to the panel and pressing on the ledge for holding the same in forward position, substantially as set forth.
