A. LESLIE KENDALL, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO \VILLIAM STANLEY, OF
NEW YORK, N. Y.
STGVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,449, dated February 28, 1888,
Application filed August 2, 1887.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, A. LESLIE KENDALL, a citizen ofthe United States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a full and exact specification.
My invention relates especially to the tops and lids or covers of stoves; and the object of my improvements is to provide for lifting the stove-covers. Heretofore this has been done by casting each stovecover with a depression or bowl in its upper surface, in which the lifter is inserted in order tolift the cover. The expense of forming these depressions and the loss caused by the blowing and scarring of the covers in the process of casting, on account of the presence of the cores by means of which the depressions are formed, constitute a large percentage of the cost of stove-covers. By means of my improvements I entirely do away with these depressions in the covers and avoid the consequent loss and expense in the manner hereinafter explained.
My invention consists, substantially, in casting in the top of the stove and adjacent to each cover-opening one or more slots or depressions, whiclnwhen the cover is in position, extend under the cover and afford space for the insertion of a lifter by means of which the cover may be grasped and moved. Such slots can be easily formed in casting the top by forming corresponding slots in the pattern, as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a plan View of a portion of the top of a stove. Fig. 2 showsasection of a cover and the adjacent parts of the stove-top with a lifter in posit-ion for removing the cover, and Fig. 3 shows a lifter adapted for use with stoves made in the manner herein described.
The same letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several drawings.
A A are sections of the stove-top, and B B are covers which, when in position on the stove, rest upon flanges e 8 around the cover-openings in the stove-top.
Serial No. 245,941. No model.)
a a a are slots or depressions in the stovetop adjoining the cover-openings. These slots, as shown in Fig. 2, extend under the edges of the covers B, and are made of such size and shape as to permit the insertion of the coverlifter.
The covers B B are cast in the usual manner, except that the depression for receiving the lifter is omitted, so that the upper surface of each cover is perfectly plain. In order to lift the covers thus made, I have devised the cover-lifter 6, having fingers c c d, by means of which the cover is seized by its edge, the finger (1 being below and the fingers c 0 above the cover, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings. I have not claimed this lifter herein, but have made it the subject of a separate application for Letters Patent.
It will be evident to those skilled in the art that any number of the slots or depressions a a a. may be formed in the stove-topin the process of casting without materially adding to its cost by simplyforruing corresponding slots or depressions in the pattern. The slots may be placed at such points in the circumference 7 of each cover-opening as may be deemed most convenient, and the number of slots at each opening may be made greater or less without departing from the nature of my invention.
By means of my invention I not only mate- 8o rially reduce the cost of manufacture of stovecovers, but also lessen the tendency of the covers to crack when heated in using, while at the same time the appearance of the stove is improved by the substitution of the comparatively small slots in the stove-top for the unsightly depressions heretofore made in the covers.
I do not herein claim the stove-lid lifter shown and described, since that forms the sub- 0 ject-matter of a separate application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 256,213.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of a stove cover or lid 5 and a stove-top provided with a slot or slots adjacent to and extending under the cover, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of a stove-eover and a In testimony whereof I have hereunto substove-top provided with an opening for the scribed my name this 28th"day of July, A. D. cover, and having in its upper surface a slot 1887.
or depression extending under and partially A. LESLIE KENDALL. 5 overlapped by the cover when the latter is in Witnesses:
position on the cover-opening, substantially SANDS F. RANDALL,
as and. for the purposes set forth. A. J KENDALL.
