SLIDING DOOR FOR STOVES.
Application filed December 18, 1924. Serial No. 756,755.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIC G. NICOLAUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Doors for Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in sliding doors for stoves, and is particularly intended for closing the space below the gas burners though, of course, it may be used in any position desired.
The primary object of this invention is the construction of a very simple way of applying a vertical door and opening and holding it open by swinging it upward into a horizontal position, and then pushing it in whereby it will be held in its open position.
A further object of the invention is providing the frame of the stove with a hori- -zontal slot to receive the ed es of the door and providing the inner en or top of the door with means for catching the wall of the slot and maintaining the door in its closed position.
A further object of the invention is prothan the other.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the door in its open positi'op.
Fig. 6 is a similar view showing a horizontal run-way provided for the door.
In Fig. 1 a stove A is shown to which my improved door B is applied. This door consists of a central portion 1, which is surrounded by an L-shaped frame 2. The door B has its edges turned inward, as at 3, and is secured to one leg of the L-shaped frame 2 by bolts 3 which pass through them. It will be noted that the door is located to close and open the space which lies under the place 4 occupied by the horizontal burners (not shown). Ordinarily this part .of the stove is open, but providing it with a door it is converted .into a warming oven.
The door B consists. preferably of sheet metal, which may or may not be enameled and its vertical edges 5 slide in horizontal slots 6, formed'in the sides 7 of the frame of the stove. The upper ends of the leg 5,
of the L-shaped frame 2, are bent into hook viding the frame of the door with two horizontal slots adapted to receive opposite edges of the door and bending the upper ends of the edges of the door inward, whereby they catch on the lower walls of the slots and maintain the door in a closed position, at the same time enabling the door to be swung outward. and open and, when desired, pushed inward and maintained in its open position.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of a stove showing my improved door construction applied to the space under the burners.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detached perspective view showing one side of the frame of the stove and the corresponding edge of the door in closed position.
' A suitable handle 9 is located at the lower edge of the door B, whereby it may be swung outward and caused to slide inward until its handle 9 strikes the tray- 10, which is placed below the burner space. This tray 10 is supported in a run-way 11, whereby it is removable for thepurpose of cleaning it. As shown, the center portion of the door is also bent inward in hook-shape, as shown at 12, though this hook does not perform any function in respect to the door in its several positions, except it makes a'finish for its upper edge.
If desired, a run-way 13 may be provided in which run-way the door can he slid and supported in an desired position. However, this adds a ditional expense and is not at all necessary.

From the above description, it will be ob- [vious that the central portion B of the door is surrounded by the L-shaped frame 2. However, I do not desire to be limited to this specific construction, since variations in respect to it may be made.
In operation by taking hold of the handle 9, the lower edge of the door is swung outward and upward and then pushed inward into an open position, and when it is desired to close the door, it is pulled outward by means of the handle 9 catches on the lower wall of the slots 6, thus stopping the optward movement of the door and sustaining it in its vertical closed position.
By means of the above construction a very simple and cheap arrangement is provided vfor making a door that can the manner described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A sliding door for stoves and the like, comprising a door-frame havi openings, a door having its edges over apping the be operated in frame and adapted to pass through the said openings, the top edges of the overlapping portion of the door adapted to en age with the wall of the opening when the oor is in a closed position. v

A sliding door comprising a stove-frame having slots with open inner ends, a stovedoor having vertical L-shaped portions at its ends, one leg of the L-shaped portion extending beyond the other leg and bent inward and downward for the purpose of stopping and sustaining the door in its closed position.. i 6.
