SHOULDER-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,394, lated February 2l, 1888.
(No model.)
To all whom t may con-cern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. HnsKINs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Osceola, in the county of Mississippi and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoulden Pads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable oth ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and use ful improvements in pads for shoulder wear, the object of my invention being to provide a pad which can be worn upon the shoulder, so as to distribute the pressure or weight of ob` 2o jects carried on the shoulder; and my invention consists in providing a pad of crimped leather of such configuration that it will conform to the shape of the shoulder, with straps for connecting the saine to the body, and in providing the crimped or properly-shaped leather with a metallic plate, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illus trate my invention, Figure l is a view showing my improved shoulder-pad applied in a position for use. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view, taken through the line :v c of Fig. l.
A refers to the body portion of the pad, which is made of heavy leather, which is crimped or shaped upon a block having the configuration of the shoulder of a person, said block having raised portions which will form depressions in the leather which will corrcspend with the collar-bones of the body, so that the pressure will not come directly upon the same. v, Io the front and rear sides of the leather pad A are attached strips b b, which may be connected to each other by a suitable buckle, these strips being attached to the front and rear inner corners of the pad.
Upon the upper surface of the pad is attached a curved metallic plate, B, which is secured to the leather pad by suitable rivets or stitching, this curved plate serving to make the upper portion of the pad rigid and d1s ltribute the pressure over the shoulder.
The edge of the pad A nearest the neck is turned upwardly, as shown at c, and the inner edge of the plate is of the same configuration.
The metallic plate B, hereinbefore referred to, is slightly curved in cross-section, and it is also curved transversely, so that when worn upon the shoulder articles placed thereon will not have a tendency to slipv off.
The device hereinbefore described may be advantageously used by laborers, such as hodcarriers, cotton pickers, or by others who, from the nature of their employment, have to carry heavy weights upon their shoulders, and by use of this device the weight will be distributed and undue pressure upon any particular portion of the shoulder prevented.
Ihe device hereinbefore described may be made in different sizes, and I do not wish to limit myself to the precise construction herein shown, but reserve the right to modify my invention within the scope of the claims.
I am aware that it has been proposed to provide shoulder-pads for garments which are adapted to be worn under said garments, so as to impart a better lit to the same, as shownin Patent No. 207,211, and` I do not claim such pad as my invention.
I claim- .1. The hereindescribed shoulder-pad, ccnsisting, substantially as described, of a blank of iiexible material shaped to lit the human shoulder', with its inner edge upturned and ends extended, and a single securing-strap secured at the inner corners of the extended ends and diagonally with relation to the upturned inner edge of the pad.
2. A shoulder-pad consisting, substantially as described, of a blank of flexible material shaped to fit the human shoulder, with its inner edge upturned and ends extended, a metal plate Secured to the central'part of the blank and shaped to conform thereto, and the securing-strap connected to the inner corners of the extended ends diagonal to the upturned inner edge of the pad.
3. A shoulder-pad consisting of a flexible ICC blank having both edges curved in the same In testimony whereof I affix' my signature in direction and shaped to fit the huma-n shoulpresence of two Witnesses.
der, with its inner or concave edge npturned,
a metal plate secured to the central part of the VILLIAM B. HASKINS. blank and shaped to conform thereto, and a securing-strap secured to the inner corners of l/Vitnesses:
the extended ends of the pad diagonal to the M. H. FLETCHER,
inner edge. ROBERT DEAN.
