Machliri Attorney-Karl L. Spivak [5 7] ABSTRACT 4 Claims, 8 Drawing Figures COMBINED SCOURING DEVICE HOLDER AND SCRAPER BACKGROUND Pots, pans, and other containers can, in many cases, be cleaned by means of a dishcloth and a detergent. But, when the contaminating material is burnt on to a surface, it becomes necessary to use a steel-wool scouring pad and a powerful solvent. Such solvents can be injurious to the skin and are particularly objectionable to ladies. Further, steel wool fibers scratch the hands and sometimes penetrate under finger nails to cause infection.
IN THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a top plan view of handle for a scouring device embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 is a side elevational view looking in the direction of line 2 2 on FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a bottom plan view of the scouring device of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged sectional view looking in the direction of line 4 4 on FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 is a sectional view looking in the direction of line 5 5 on FIG. 2. As best seen in FIGS. 3 and 5, the handle 12 terminates transversely in depending, spaced flanges 32, 34 which extend below a plane drawn through the web section 36 of the handle 12. The pressure exerted by the finger 24 forces the steel wool pad 28 into engagement with the flanges 32, 34. The combination of forcing a portion of the steel wool pad into the opening 30 and other portions into the flanges 32, 34 forms an extremely tight and reliable engagement between the pad 28 and the handle 12. The resilient nature of the finger 24 serves to permit the pad to be readily removable from the handle when so desired.
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the use of a steel wool pad carried by the device.
FIG. 7 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the use of the scraping edge of the device of this invention.
FIG. 8 is a fragmentary top plan view showing a modification of the device of FIG. 1.
The preferred embodiment illustrated includes a handle 12, one end of which is equipped with scraping means 14, and the other end of which is equipped with clamping means 16. The scraping means consists of a bevelled blade 18 which has a front edge 20 and side edges 21 which are selectively brought to bear on the surface to be scraped. In the embodiment of FIG. 1, the front edge 20 is provided with a row of teeth 22 which serve to break up hard encrustations which edge 20 may slide over. In the embodiment of FIG. 8, side edges 21 are also provided with teeth 22. In addition to breaking up hard encrustations, teeth 22 also can reach into corners and other narrow or hard-to-reach sur faces. See FIG. 7.
The clamping means 16 consists of a finger 24, which is secured to, or is moulded integrally with, handle 12 as at 26. Finger 24 has enough resiliency to be movable away from the juxtaposed end of handle 12 to permit insertion of steel wool pad 28, or the like, between it and the juxtaposed end of handle 12. FIGS. 2 and 6. The pressure exerted by finger 24 forces the steel wool pad to project into opening 30 to insure firm engagement of the pad. To remove the pad, it is merely necessary to pull finger 24 downwardly, as viewed in FIGS. 4 and 6, enough to release the pad.
What I claim is:
1. In a holder for a scouring pad for cleaning pots and pans, the combination of A. a handle, said handle terminating laterally in two ends,
1. one said end including scraping means, said scraping means serving to break up hard encrustations on said pots and pans,
2. the second said end being equipped with clamping means, said clamping means serving to securely grip a scouring pad,
said handle terminating transversely in two edges, each said edge including a depending flange,
4. the said clamping means including a resilient finger which is integral with the handle,
a. said finger having a connected end which is connected to the handle inwardly from the one said end,
b. said finger projecting below a plane drawn through the handle and terminating in a free end,
c. said handle including a central web portion between the edges, the web portion being provided with an opening in alignment over the finger,
d. the free end of the finger being bent upwardly to project into the opening when no scouring pad is attached to the handle, and
e. the said free end of the finger and the natural resiliency of the finger forcing portions of the scouring pad to project into the opening and to engage the periphery of the opening and other portions of the scouring pad into engagement with the depending flanges, the contacts between the scouring pad and the flanges and the periphery of the opening insuring firm engagement of the scouring pad with the handle.
2. The invention of claim 1 wherein the scraping means includes a plurality of teeth, said teeth being integrally formed with the handle.
3. The invention of claim 2 wherein the material which is removed from the web portion to provide the opening is utilized to form the resilient finger.
4. The invention of claim 2 wherein the said scraping means includes a blade which has a front edge and side edge.
