8. H. JOHNSON. GUTTING NIPPBRS.
UNITED STATES PATENT f OFFICE.
ROBERT H. JOHNSON, OF CHAT'IANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
CUTTING-NIPPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,759, dated February 14, 1888.
Application filed November 21, 1887. Serial No. 255,826. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. JOHNSON, a citizenof the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Outting-Nippers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cutting-nippersprovided withreversibleedges; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side View of a pair of nippers embodying the invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of one of the double-edged detachable cutter dies or blocks. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of one of the nipper-jaws, showing the recess therein whereby the corresponding cutter die is attached to the Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a pair of nippers having the similar jaws, B, and similar handles, C. When the nippers are closed, the upper flat surfaces, b I), of the jaws are aligned with each other and with the upper or outer dat surfaces of the cutter-dies, hereinafter described.
D D are the cutter-dies, each kof which has a central inclined portion or web, d, and similar edge portions, E, on each side of the web, the faces cof which'edge portions are parallel to each other and inclined to the opposite parallel faces, d', of the web; The-face e of each edge portion is connected to the web on the unprotected sides thereof by the outwardlyinclined surfaces F f, the former of whichv makes a more acute angle with the face of the corresponding edge portion, the said angle G constituting the cutting-edge'of the die.
The inclined surfaces Ff of one edge por tion of a cutter-die are respectively on opposite sides of said die to those on which the corresponding surfaces of the other edge portion are, as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the die is reversed the lower cutting-edge G will occupy the same position as the upper cuttingedge did before reversal.
Each jaw Bis provided with a transverse dovetailed recess, H, into which can be slid and fitted either of the edge portions of the corresponding cutter-die with its cutting-edge G outward. From the outer edge of said recess the surface hof the jaw is inclined inward asufcient distance to lie closely against the adjacent face d' of the web, and then inclined sufficiently outward, as at h', to lie closely against the adjacent inclined surface f of the outer edge portion of the cutter-die. from the above that as the opposite'sides of the cutter-die are similar they will fit equally It is evident` closely in the dovetailed recess H and against the surfaces h h', and will always have the cutting-edge not in the recess facing inwardly,`
as that in said recess lmust necessarily face outwardly.`
Having thus described my claim-- 1. The combinatiomwith the nippers having similar transverse dovetailed recesses, H, at corresponding points in its jaws, of the cutterdies D, each having a web, and similar opposite edge portions, E, provided with cuttingedges G, facing in opposite direction, either of which edge'portions can be slid and fitted into the corresponding recess H, with its cuttingedge outward, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the nippers having the handles O and similar jaws, B, each provided with 'the dovetailedl transverse recess H and inclined surfaces h h', of the cutter-dies D, each provided with a web, d, having parallel opposite faces, d', and the edge portions, E, each having the face e, inclined surfaces F f,
invention, I
and cutting-edge G, the cutting-edges of the n two edge portions facing in opposite directions, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT n. JoHNsoN.
