To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH G. BAKER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Vineland, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Right and Left Hand Side and Turning Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in right and left hand side and turning tools, and has for its object to provide a tool of this character which will be simple in construction, inexpensive in the cost of manufacture and will save considerable expense and time used in grinding and forging tools of this character.
A further object of this invention is to provide a tool which may be placed in the tool post in pairs, the co-acting surfaces being produced at such an angle to the edges that when placed in the tool post said edges are engaged by the screw and bottom wall of the receiver of the tool post, the tools will be forced to one side so that the lower corner between an edge and side face will be forced against one side of the tool post, and the diagonally opposite corner or the same corner of the other tool will be forced against the opposite side of the tool post, thus fastening the tools in such a position as to form a clearance between its outer upper face and the work. The working edge of the tool extends beyond the lower edge of the tool, thus providing a clearance between the non-working part of the tool and the work.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is an end view of a pair of tools, showing them in place in a tool post. Fig. 2, a similar view of a pair of tools before being forced to the side by the screw of the tool post. Fig. 3, a side elevation of a pair of turning tools. Fig. 4, a plan or edgeview thereof. Fig. 5, a side elevation of a pair of side tools, and Fig. 6, a plan or edge View thereof.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A. and A represent similar tools usedin pairs as plainly shown by the drawings in reverse positions, so that their beveled faces B lie against one another or coact. The edge of each of these faces is also beveled as at C, slanting outward away from the non-beveled face D of the tool, so that when a pair of said tools are placed in the opening of the tool post F and the screw G of said tool post screwed down until it engages said tools, the latter because of their beveled edges C and beveled faces B, will be forced against the sides of the tool post until the non-beveled sides of the tools rest at an angle to the walls of the tool post, wedging the upper edge of one tool and the opposite lower edge of the adjacent tool against the side walls of the tool post, as well as the bottom thereof for holding the tools exceedingly firm, thus forming a clearance between the tool and the work, which is equal to the space H between the sidewall of the tool post and the lower edge of the tool, since the upper edge or working portion of the tool is lying against the side wall of the tool post. The tools have their ends beveled inward and downward as at I, when taken with relation to the position the tools assume while in use, thus producing a clear ance between the lower edge of the tool and the work. In the turning tools the same object is accomplished in a similar manner, the only difference being the shape of the upper outer ends of the tools. Each end of the tool is beveled inward as before described so that when used one way it is a right hand tool and when reversed it is a left hand tool. Then by inverting the pair of tools the other tool may be used at one end, and by reversing the tools again the outer end of the same tools may be used, thus we have four cutting edges by the use of two tools, a pair of left hand and a pair' of right hand tools. It will be understood that in practice the beveled faces may be made greater or less, producing a greater or less clearance between the work and the too s.
From the foregoing it will be noticed that a tool made in the manner described, producing a sufficient clearance to prevent any interference with the work from the tool along its lower edge, either at the side or end, and it produces an inexpensive tool which is reversible and invertible, thus forming four working edges, two of which are left handed and two right handed, and a tool formed in this manner requires very little grinding and forging and can be used for a considerable length of time with a very small amount of waste.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as here shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is-
1. A tool consisting of two sections, each of said sections having a non-beveled face, a beveled face and a beveled edge, the sections being so placed together as to slide upon each other and be forced out of the vertical line by the pressure of a tool post screw.
2. A tool consisting of two sections, each of said sections having a non-beveled face, a beveled face and a beveled edge, one of said sections being in an inverted position to the other when placed side by side in a tool post, the screw of said tool post forcing the lower edge of one section against the side wall of the tool post, and the upper edge of the opposite section against the opposite side wall of the tool post, forcing the non-beveled faces of the sections to an angle in relation to the side walls of the tool post for producing a clearance between the tool and the work below the edge of the former.
