2. Prior Art Decorative neckpieces are often worn around the neck to fill and adorn the opening formed by a coat, jacket, shirt or the like. Many neckpieces, such as ascots and the common necktie, require some physical dexterity in order to tie a presentable knot. In some neckpieces knots are pre-tied and the neckpiece is attached to the wearer with a band which generally remains unexposed beneath the collar.
The present invention discloses a neckpiece which includes a wide decorative body piece which may be readily attached to the neck of the wearer without requiring the tieing of a knot or the concealing of an unsightly band.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A neckpiece or cravat which includes an elongated cloth neck-encircling band, is disclosed. A decorative body piece for adorning the front of the wearer is attached to the lower edge of the neck-band at approximately one edge of the band. In the presently preferred embodiment one part of a Velcro fastener is attached to one surface of the neck-band at one end of the band while the other part of the fastener is attached to the opposite surface of the neck-band at the other end of the band. The neckpiece is placed on the wearer by first folding the band once upon the body piece and placing the neck-band around the neck such that the fasteners may meet beneath the body piece.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 illustrates the invented neckpiece, while being worn.
FIG. 2 is a view of the neckpiece taken through section line 22 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the neckpiece taken through section line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a plan view of the neckpiece and also illustrates the position of the neck-band when the neckband is folded upon the body piece.
FIG. 5 is a general perspective view of the neckpiece which illustrates the manner in which the fasteners are attached once the. neck-encircling band has been placed around the neck of the wearer.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Referring first to FIG. 4, the neckpiece includes an elongated neck-encircling band and a body piece 11, partially shown in FIG. 4. The neck-encircling band 10 is utilized to support the body piece on the wearer while the body piece 11 is placed typically in the opening of a coat or jacket such as shown in FIG. 1.
In the presently preferred embodiment the entire neckpiece is made of cloth, such as a cloth having a decorative pattern or print. Preferably the neck-band and the body piece include the same pattern or print.
Referring to all the figures, the neck-band 10 is made from an elongated piece of cloth, folded on itself such that the fold forms the upper edge 15 of the neckthe open end of the fold such that when the low edge 16 of the band is sewn, the body piece 11 extends downwardly from the neck-band 10 and is attached to the neck-band. Pellum is included within the folded cloth used to form the neck-band 10 in order to add body to the neck-band. The pellum is stitched on both sides of the band to prevent curling during the washing process.
As is best illustrated in FIG. 1 in phantom lines, the body piece 11 should be large enough to fill the opening defined by a coat, such as opening 17, defined by lapels l8 and collar 19. Preferably the body piece should extend downward beneath the opening 17 of the coat a sufficient distance to assure that the lower edge of the body piece 11 will not become exposed, approximately 15 inches below the neck-band. The body piece 11, when sewn into the band I0 of the presently preferred embodiment, is sewn so as to include a plurality of pleats 12 which appear as natural folds. Also in the presently preferred embodiment the body piece 11 is sewn to the band 10 near one end of the band such as end 20 illustrated in FIG. 4.
While metal fasteners or other fasteners may be used,
in the presently preferred embodiment a fastener which comprises synthetic pads which adhere to one another when pressed together, is utilized. This fastening means is commercially available and sold under the trademark Velcro. This fastener includes a first section, shown as section 13, which includes a plurality of closely spaced hook members and a second portion 14 which includes a plurality of loops. When member 13 is pressed against member 14 they adhere to one another although they may be readily manually pulled apart. The first portion 13 is sewn to one end of theband 10 on the surface of band 10 which is the same general surface as the front or decorated surface of body piece 11. The second portion 14 of the fastener is disposed at the other end 20 of the band 10 on the opposite surface of the band.
In order to wear the neckpiece, the band lO-is first folded once upon the body piece, as illustrated in FIG. 4, by band 10. Note that after the fold, the lower edge 16 of the band then becomes the upper edge of the entire neckpiece, including the body piece 11. After this fold is made the band is.not visible above the body piece 11. Next, the neck-encircling band 10 is placed around the neck and the fastener sections 13 and 14 are joined. When this occurs the neckpiece will be supported from the neck. As may be best seen in FIG. 5, once section 13 of the fastener is brought in contact with section 14, the entire fastening means is concealed, both by the body piece 11 and by the band 10. Thus, once on a wearer, and as illustrated in FIG. 3, the fastening means is confined between the ends of band 10 and does not come in contact with the body of the wearer, assuring that the'neckpiece may be worn in comfort.
Thus, a neckpiece has been disclosed which may be readily made from cloth and which may be placed on the wearer without tieing any knots and without having any fastening means exposed.
