  • This invention concerns a slotting head of the kind (hereinafter termed of the kind referred to) comprising a carrier for at least one male slotting knife blade which is adapted to co-operate with female slotting knives to cut slots in corrugated board or similar material in a converting machine. 7
  • a slotting head of the kind referred to is characterized by the provision of single means for securing a knife blade against movement around the periphery of the carrier and at least one further means angularly spaced from said single means, for securing same against lateral movement with respect to the carrier, whereby only said single means requires manipulation in order to adjust the angular position of the knife blade with respect to the periphery of the carrier.
  • a knife blade of extended length prefferably built up from separate knife blade segments, and in one embodiment of the invention such segments'are individually secured rigidly to a common support member which is itself connected with the carrier both by said single means and said further means.
  • FIG. 1 shows a fragmentary end view of a first form of slotting head equipped with a single knife blade comprised by a single knife blade segment;
  • FIG. 2 shows a cross-section of the slotting head on the line IIII of FIG. 1;
  • FIG. 3 shows a cross-section of the slotting head on the line III-III of FIG. 1;
  • FIG. 4 shows an end view of a second form of slotting head equipped with two knife blades each of which is constructed from a plurality of individual knife blade segments;
  • FIG. 5 shows a cross-section of the slotting head on the line V-V of FIG. 4;
  • FIG. 6 shows a cross-section of the slotting head on the line VI-VIof FIG. 4.
  • FIG. 7 shows a fragmentary end view of a slotting head similar to that of FIG. 4 but additionally equipped with a glue lap cutting knife.
  • the slotting head comprises an annular carrier 10 which is adapted to be secured on a shaft which extends transversely of tthe slotting section of a converting machine.
  • the carrier 10 carries a knife blade 11 which is secured to its periphery and adapted to ,co-operate with female slotting knives to cut slots in corrugated board or similar material.
  • an annular slot 12 of T-cross section is secured to the carrier 10 by means of two bolts 13 and 14 respectively.
  • the bolt 13 has a head 13a which is located in the base of the slot 12 and a shank 13b which extends outwardly through the slot 12 to pass through an aperture in the blade 11 to receive a nut 15.
  • the bolt 14 has a head 14a which is slidably located in the base of the slot 12, a first shank part 14b which extends outwardly through the slot 12 to form a shoulder at its junction with a second shank part 14d of reduced diameter which passes through an aperture in the blade 11 to receive a nut 16.
  • the heads 13a and 14a of both bolts 13 and 14 are a sliding fit within the channel 12.
  • the blade 11 is firmly gripped against the carrier 10 and locked against movement around the periphery of the carrier.
  • the blade 11 is firmly gripped against the shoulder 14c and thereby secured against lateral displacement from the carrier 10 by the action of the head 14a of the bolt 14 lying in the slot 12.
  • the blade 11 when it is desired to adjust the angular position of the blade 11 it is only necessary to loosen the nut 15; the blade may then be moved around the periphery of the carrier, the bolt heads 13a and 14a then sliding around slot 12. The blade 11 may be relocked against further movement around the periphery of the carrier 10 by retightening the nut 15.
  • FIGS. 4 to 6 inclusive wherein like parts are indicated by like reference numerals, it will be seen that there are two separate knife blades 20 and 21.
  • the blade 21 is comprised by separate blade segments 22 and 23 which are each secured to the carrier 10 by means of bolts 13 similar to those illustrated in FIG. 2.
  • the blade 21 is fixed and not intended to be adjusted around the periphery of the carrier 10.
  • the blade 20 is also formed from two separate blade segments 24 and 25. As in the previously described embodiment the blade 20 is secured to the carrier 10 against movement around its periphery by a single bolt 13, an additional bolt 14 being provided to secure the blade against lateral displacement from the carrier at a position spaced from the bolt 13.
  • the construction and operation of the bolts 13 and 14 is the same as described in connection with the previous embodiment, but in this embodiment a support plate 26 is provided and located on the outside of the blade segments 24 and 25, the bolts 13 and 14 extending therethrough so that the two blade segments 24 and 25 are firmly connected with the support plate 26 when the nuts 15 and 16 are tightened, so that the entire assembly is locked against movement around the periphery of the carrier 10 by virtue of the single bolt 13.
  • the support plate 26 or the blade itself is provided with a graduated scale 27 and the carrier 10 with a datum line 28 to facilitate proper adjustment of the position of the blade 20.
  • FIG. 7 illustrates a slotting head similar to that of FIG. 4 but additionally equipped with a glue lap cutting knife 30.
  • the knife 30 is secured by means of bolts 31 to the support plate 26, so that once again this part is connected with the entire assembly and may thus be locked to the carrier by virtue of the single bolt 13.
  • a blade may be comprised by more than two segments when each would be secured to a support plate by means connecting the support plate with the carrier to prevent lateral displacement relative to the carrier, the support plate being secured to the carrier at one location only against movement around the periphery of the carrier.
  • a rotary carrier means mounting an arcuate male knife blade at the periphery of said carrier in a laterally fixed circumferentially adjusted position
  • said mounting means comprising means mounting said knife blade for adjustment circumferentially on said carrier, a first single releasable fixing means on said mounting means for securing said knife blade in circumferentially adjusted position on said carrier, and a further fixing means on said mounting means circumferentially spaced from said first fixing means for securing said knife blade against lateral displacement with respect to said carrier both when said first fixing means is released for circumferential adjustment movement of said knife blade and when said first fixing means has secured said knife blade against circumferential displacement whereby said blade may be displaced and held in a circumferentially adjusted position by manipulation of only said single fixing means while being laterally maintained with respect to said carrier by said further fixing means.
  • said first fixing means comprises a first bolt passing through an opening in said blade, a substantially T-shaped arcuate slot on said carrier, a correspondingly shaped head on the inner end of said bolt slidably mounted in said slot, and a nut on the outer end of said bolt which when drawn tight pulls the bolt head against a wall of said slot to clamp said blade to the carrier.
  • a slotting head assembly as defined in claim 2, wherein said further fixing means comprises a second bolt passing through an opening in said blade and having a head slidably mounted in said slot, a nut on the outer end of said second bolt, and a shoulder on the shank of said second bolt against which said knife blade is clamped when said nut is tightened to secure said blade against lateral movement with respect to said carrier, said second bolt head remaining freely slidably disposed in said slot when said nut is tightened.
  • a slotting head assembly according to claim 1, wherein said blade is composed of separate blade segments individually secured rigidly to a common support member, said support member being itself connected with said carrier both by said single fixing means and by said further fixing means.
  • a slotting head comprising a plate located on the side of said blade segments remote from the carrier, the bolts of said single fixing means and said further fixing means passing through said plate and said blade segments, there being at least one bolt passing through each blade segment, whereby when the nuts are tightened the entire blade assembly can be secured against angular and lateral movement.
  • a slotting head according to claim 5, wherein a glue lap cutting knife is additionally secured by bolts to said plate and may thus be additionally locked against angular and lateral movement.
