Description

0 e0 LDTHWAIT GLO'IIHH$ DRYING; APPARATUS.
No. 37,686. Patented Feb. 17, 1863.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES GOLDTHWAIT, OF SOUTH WEYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED CLOTHES-DRYING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,686, dated February 17, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.- v
Beit known that I, GnAaLns GOLDTHWAIT, of South Weyniouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful meansfor facilitating the hanging out of clothes for drying, and also for facilitating the taking of them down after being dried and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure lis a side view of my invention applied to a clothes-line, Figs. 2, 3, and 4, detached views of the same.
Similar letters of' reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a simple and economical device to facilitate the hanging out of clothes for drying, and also to are. also, when ,dried, removed from the lineone piece at a time. This is a slow and tedious operation in cold weather, and is attended withconsiderable trouble in windy weatherdifliculties which it is believed are fully obviated by my invention.
The invention consists in the employment or use of hangers or supplemental frames arranged in such a manner that the clothes may be applied to them in the house or under cover'where the washing is performed, the hangers or frames, with the clothes attached, being placed or suspended on suitable dryinglines prepared to receive them.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, 1 will proceed to describe it.
Arepresentsaclothes-line, attached to suitable posts, B, or arranged in any proper way out of doors, to receive the clothes for drying.
0 represents supplemental frames or hangers, which are composed of two or more uprights, a, attached either to straight bars I) or to circular bars or hoops c. In Fig. 2 the uprights are shown attached to a hoop, and to straight bars I) in Figs. 3 and 4. The upper ends of the uprights'c a have hooks d d atached to them. These hooks may be constructed of iron, well galvanized, in order to prevent oxidation, or they maybe constructed of brass or any composition which will not rust so as to stain the clothes by coming in contactwith them. These supplemental frames or hangers may be of any suitable length. Those provided with the straight bars I) may be about four feet long. The diameter of the hoop may be equal to the length of the bars.
The supplemental frames or hangers are suspended to the clothes-line A by means'of the hooks d d, as shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 shows the bar b at the upper ends of the uprights a a, a line, a, being attached to the lower ends of the uprights a a.
The operation is as follows A line is placed or stretched in the room or apartment in which the washing is performed, and the hangers or frames G are suspended on said line. The clothes are secured on the bars I) or line 0, if
frames as-shown in Fig. the used, by means of clothes-pins, in. the same way as they are secured on an ordinary clothes-line. W hen the hangers or frames are filled with clothes, the latter are encircled with one arm and the hangers or framedctached from tlu line and placed in a proper basket or ,recep. role, and
'when all of the hangers or frames have been -a great deal of time and labor, and in the winter season the exposure to col-d for any considerable length of time is avoided, and this is an important feature, as during the winter season dangerous colds are frequently contracted in consequence of the washerwoman coming out of a warm apartment in and standing in the open air a considerable length of time to fasten the clothes on the line.
I do not confine myself to the precise construction of the hangers or frames 0, for they may be modified in various ways. The frame shown in Fig. at is a very good form of consbruotion, as it cannot be blown ofl from the hooks d, and constructed in such a manner line, even if it makes an entire revolution that the clothes may be secured upon them,
around it. and the hangers or frames suspended on the Having thus described my invention, what line A, as herein set forth. I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters CHARLES GOLDTHWAIT. Patent, is- Witnesses: I The employment or use of the hangers or BENJAMIN L. OADY, supplemental clothes-frames (J, provided with CHAS. G. MORRILL.
