EvKEM PSH-AL L. I HEEL-FOR BOOTS 0 sflonsg,
'No. 376,824. Patented Ja 24, 1888.
- miiiiiul UNITED j STATES PATENT ()FFICEe ELEAZER KEMPSHALL, on NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
HE'EL FOR ooTs OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,824, dated Januar'y24, 1888.
' Application filed July 8, was. SerialNo.20T,386. n model.) l
To all whom iv may concern:
Be it known that I. ELEAZER KEMPSHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the'coun'ty of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of heelprotectors that are inserted into the heel, and
the object is to provide a protector which shall be securely held in place without fastenings, and shall be clear of the objectionable features of thoseheretofore used by concealing them in the boot-heel; and it consists in. the construction hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of theunder side of the same. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view showing a vertical section of one of my protectors. Fig.3 is a top view of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the lower lift and protector. Fig.
' 5 is a similar view showing a solid protector inserted in the lift.
Similar characters designate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
My improvements are designed especially for the finer and more expensive kinds of ladies boots, in which heel-protectors are not now usually inserted, because they detract from the finished appearance of the boot. To overcome this objection the heel B is made of several layers or lifts of leather in the ordi- I nary manner; or,ifdesired,a wooden orleathercovered wooden heel may be used having one lift of leather forming the bottom thereof, in which my protector is inserted.
H represents the lower lift of the heel, which ,is bored into from the upper side in one or more places, asmay be desired, and the protector 6 inserted therein, sothat it willreach nearly through the lift, the insertion of the beneath the protector.
protector b a suitable tool causing 5; slight raised surface, 4, on the under sideof the lift This raised'surface 4 indicates to the workman the position of the concealed protector 6, and, assures the purchaser that there are protectors in the heels of the boots.
By the insertion of myprotector the under surface of the lift is disturbed so little that the whole surface can be polished at the same time and given a uniform finish, which could not be done were the lift bored through and the protector made to protrude. 7
My protector consists of a hollow conical stud or ring, and is intended to be filled with leather or other material, 7, composing the lift, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. In this case, when the 'heel is worn away to the line a a, the heel-protector is exposed and resists further rapid wear, while the central core or filling,
7, wears away with the lift, leaving the n'ar-t row rim of the hard-metal stud slightly projecting, to catch into depressions in the footway or road toresist any tendency of the heel to slip. In this form the conical shape of theprotector prevents its coming out or being lost when in the heel.
in form, if desired, asrectangular, polygonal, or of other desired peripheral outline.-
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-'- An improved article of manufacture'consisting of a boot-heel lift having Q COIliCZt-l stud The protectors maybe other than circular"
