Description

I (No Mode-1.)
H. R. MATHIAS.-
SLIDE WAY.
No. 376,671. Patented Jan. 17, 1888.
m' H rL- w declare that the following is a full, clear, and.
l UNITED STATES HENRY H. MATHIAs, or ATHENS, oHIo.
PATENT OrEicE.
SLIDEWAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376.671, dated January 17, 1888.
- Application tiled September 9, 1887. Serial No. 249,247. (No model.) v
.To alZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY R. MATHIAs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Athens, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented certainl new and useful Improvements in Slideways; and I do hereby exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- Apertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in whichy Figure lis a side view of my improved slideways, showing them attached in operative position to beams or uprights. Fig. 2 is a front view ofone ofthe same removed yfrom the beams or uprights. Fig.\ 3 is a longitudinal section on line x x in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-section view taken on line 1/ y in Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an excelsior cutting-machine, showing my improvement securedin op- 'Y erative position to the upright beams thereof.
Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all theiigures.
lVIy invention has relation to slideways for engines or machinery, it being shown in Fig.
- 5 of the accompanying drawings, for convenience of illustration, in connection with an eX- celsior cutting-machine, and it has for its 0bject to reduce friction between the fixed and movable parts to a minimum; and to this end it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as will be `hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the portions of beams or uprights to which my improved slideways B B are attached by bolts B B. l sists of a casting, C, having sides D and E, respectively. The side D is beveled upon its inner face, as shown at F, the object of which will be hereinafter fully described.
G represents ears projecting from and intef gral with the bottom of the casting, and H denotes bolts projecting from the said bottom and having screw-threaded ends.
Wooden blocks Ihaving elongated apertures J are secured in the casting between the ears G, and the bolts H project through these apertures and havel a ylong metallic strip, I', secured upon their ends, which is clamped against Each of these slideways con-4 the blocks by means of nuts K. An adjustable metallic strip, L, bears against the rear edges space formed by the forward edge of the blocks and the beveled side of the casting, 1n wh1cl1 space the vertical moving object is guided.
After the blocks have been in this manner ad- ,Y
justed to their desired position, they are again securely clamped by the clamping-strip I `1n the man ner hereinbefore described. It will be seen that. by cutting these blocks so thatthe grain extends transversely across them they will not be as liable to wear as they would 1f cut so as to have the grain parallel with their lengths.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, n
the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. It will be lseen that as the blocks wear they may be easily and quickly adjusted, or may be easily replaced with new ones by removing theclamping-stri p and the nuts.
Having thus described'my invention,-I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesv y l.. In a slideway, the combination of a flanged casting havingl one of the flanges thereof beveled upon its inner face, with wooden blocks secured in said casting, thereby forming substantially a Vshaped Way. f
2. In aslideway, the combination of a flanged casting having one of the flanges thereof' beveled upon its inner face, with wooden'blocks having the grain thereof extendingL transversely across them secured in said flanged casting, thereby forming substantially a V- Ico shaped way. i y
3. In a slideway, the combination of a casting having one of its sides beveled and ears projecting Vfrom its bottom, with wooden blocks adj ustably secured to-said'casting and having IVO ing, substantially as described, and ears and bolts projecting from the bottom thereof, with adjustable blocks having the grain thereof extending transversely across them, and having elongated -apertures, a clamping-strip, and nuts. y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto afiixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY R. M ATHIAS.

JAMES P. VooD, EVAN J. JoNEs.
