Y .y/illlllllllNHWM// UNTTEe STATES PATENT Trice.
JAMES WTATSON, OF ADDISON, OHIO.
FEED-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,146, dated December 20, 1881.
Application filed November 10, 1881. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may concern Beit known that I, JAMES WATSON, of Adr dison, in the county of Gallia and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Gutters, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specication.
Figure l is a iront view of my improved feed-cutter. Fig. 2 is a verticalseclional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view. taken through the operating-lever. Fig. 4 is adetail view, in perspective, ot' the upper part of the machine; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the fender and fender-guard detached.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to feed-cutters; and it consists in certain improvementsin the construction ot' the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In lthe drawings hereto annexed, A represents avertical board or plank, which forms the front end of the boX, (not shown,) with which it communicates through an opening, B.
Secured transversely to the lower end of plank A is a cross-piece, C, forming the base.
D D are two guide-strips, having groovesE in their inner and anges F on their outer sides. At their upper ends the said guides are provided with suitably-constructed hooks G, as in Fig. 4, by which they are hung or adjusted in notches H at theupperend of plank A, their lower ends being supported upon the base O and secured to plank A by single screws or bolts in such a mannerthatthe said guides and the plank A shall be a slight distance apart, so as to leave room for the operating-lever, as will be hereinafter described. The cross-piece or base C has an upright, I.
J is the operatinglever, which is pivoted to the upper end of a connecting-rod, K, the lower end of which is pivoted to upright I, as shown. The lever J consists of two rods or straps elnbracing the guide-strips D, connected by a which works inthe grooves E ot' the guidestrips, secured between them by a single bolt or pivot, N. The knife or cutter', which is rhomboidal in shape, has its upper and lower edges sharpened, so as to be capable of being reversed when required, being braced in the grooves of the vertical guides and between the rodsorstripscomposingtheoperating-lever. It may be made of very thin metal without danger of bending or giving. Horizontal guides O, for thelower edge of the knife, are secured transversely to the guides D, as shown.
To regulate the length of the stroke of lever J, I employ an adjustable stud, P, which may be an ordinary wood-screw screwed into one ofthe guide strips D. As the edge ofthe cutter becomes worn the said stud may be lowered sufciently to compensate for such wear.
Q is a strap secured or pivoted to lever J and carrying the fender, which consists ot' a plate, R, having clampsSembracing theflanges F of guides D, upon which it slides.
T is a guard or plate, adjustable in grooves U in the inner sides of clamps S, in order to regulate the length of the feed to be cut. The fender is secured to strap Q by a bolt, V, in such a manner that it maybe raised, when necessary, in order to compensate for wear ofthe edge of the' knife or cutter.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my improved feed-cutter will be readily understood. It is simple, inexperisive, convenient, and easily operated.
Having thus described myinventiomwhatl claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. The combination of the front board, A, having notches H, base C, and guides D, having hooks G, by which they are hung in notches H and supported on base C, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the front board, A,
the guides D, the lever J, consisting of rodsor straps embracing said guides, and the knife or cutter M, pivoted and clasped between the rods or straps composing lever J, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the guides D,hav ing ilanges F, of the fender R, having grooved IOO clamps S and adjustable plate Land the strap T, all arranged and operating substantially as Q, connecting said fender to the operating-le i and for the purpose set forth. ver, substantially as set forth. l In testimony that; I claim the foregoing as 4. As an improvementl in feed cutters, the my own I have hereto afxed mysignature in 5 combination of the front bonrd, A, base C, presence of two Witnesses.
guides D7 having grooves E, flanges F7 and hooks G, lever J, consisting of rods or straps JAMES WATSON' embracing the guides D,knife M,elamped and Witnesses: pivoted between the straps oomposinglever J, DAVID R. S. SHAFFER,
ro and the fender R S, having adjustable guard DAVlD A. POINDEXTER.
