As the material is cut by the-knife 2 when the wheel-is being'rotated, in cutting certain" kinds of mat'erial, the @material wedges under the knife and the face of the wheel so as to choke'the cutting wheel and I have found that by providing a cutting wheeluwith an .inclineclI recess extending fromapoint-approximately in line'with the. cutting edgeof theknife, to the rear? of the cutting, knife, the cutmaterial will passbetween the knifeand wheel without wedging, thereby preventing the cutting wheel from being; choked. M IVhile I have-shown a recess constructe in a particular mannerinorder to prevent the knivesof. thewheel from becoming choked by thematerial being cut, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction of recess shown, as theobject of my invention is to provide means for prevent= ing' the material from accumulating under thefknife by providing the" wheel with a recess which can be formed of various shapes without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In cutter wheels of this character used in connection with ensilage cutters, the knives are set at an angle in respect'to the face of the cutting wheel so that the material is wedged under the knife and the face of the wheel as the cutting edge of the knife is at a greater distance from the face of the wheel than the rear edge of the knife and I have found that by providing the face of the wheel with a recess having an inclined bottom under the knife ex-'- tending from the cutting edge to the rear of the knife, that the distance between the knife and the bottom of the recess is gradually increased as the material is forced under the same so as to prevent the wedging action, whereby a self-clearance is obtained.
It will be seen that I have provided a cuttingwheel for an ensilage cutter with the recess arranged between the supports and to each side thereof in order to provide an ensilage cutter with a self clearing knife so as to prevent the material being cut from wedging under the knife, and while in the drawing I have shown this'recess formed of such a size that it extends out to each side of the knife, I do not wish to limit myself to the size of recess employed as in some cases it might be found that a recess located solely between the supports willaccomplish the desired result.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a cutting wheel for an ensilage cutter of a series of tangentially arranged cutting knives mountupon spaced supports over recesses'formed in thecutting wheel in order to allow the material being cut by the knives to pass under the knives.
I claim: a
1. A rotary cutting wheel for ensilage cutters having a disk-shaped Wheel body, a series of vcutting knives mounted on one face thereof, said wheel body being provided with a clearing recess under each cutting knife having an inclined face diverging from a point in transverse alinement with the cutting edge of said knife.
2. A rotary cutting wheel for ensilage cutters having a disk-shaped wheel body, a series of cutting knives mounted on one face thereof, and spaced there from, said wheelbody having a clearing recess with an inclined bottom under each of said cutting knives presenting an inclined face in respect to the face of the knife.
3. A rotary cutting wheel for ensilage cutters having a disk-shaped wheel body, spaced knife supports mounted on one face thereof provided with inclined knife seats, knives mounted in said seats, said wheel of said recesses having an inclined face atan angle to the face of said knife.
5. A rotary cutting wheel for ensilage cutters, comprising a disk-shaped wheel'body having a Series of clearing recesses formed in one face thereof provided with inclined bottoms, an adjustable knife support mounted over each of said recesses, and a knife mounted upon said support.
6. A rotary cutting wheel for ensilage cutters, comprising a disk-shaped wheel body having a series of offsets formed on one face thereof producing a series of recesses upon the opposite face, a knife support mounted over each of said recesses, a knife mounted on said supports, said recesses having inclined bottoms presenting an inclined face in respect to the face of the knife;
7. A rotary cutting wheel for ensilage cutters having a disk-shaped wheel body, said wheel body having a series of recesses formed in one face thereof, cutter knives mounted on said wheel body over said recesses, said recesses extending from a point in transverse alinement with the cutting edge of said knife and terminating ata point to the rear of the knife."
8. The combination with a rotary cutting wheel having aseries of recesses formed in one face thereof provided with inclined bottoms, of supports arranged over each of said recesses, means for adjusting each'ofsaid supports, and a cutting knife mounted upon each pair of supports having a cutting edge in alinement withone endof said recess. A rotary cutting wheel having a pair of supports mounted upon one face thereof, a cutting blade carried by said supports and arranged at an angle to the face of said wheel, said cutting wheel having a recess formed therein under said supports eXtend-' ing from a point in alinement with the cutting edge of said knife to the rear of said knife. v
10. A cutting wheel for ensilage cutters, comprising a disk-shaped wheel body having a clearing recess formed in one face thereof provided with an inclined bottom, knife supports adjustably mounted over said recesses, said wheel body having recesses formed therein, a knife mounted on said supports over said recesses, said supports having bosses fitting in the recesses formed in the wheel body, and bolts passing through said bosses and Wheel body for securing said supports in position over said clearing recesses.
11. In an ensilage cutter, the combination with the cutting wheel having recesses formed in one face thereof, knife supports having bosses at one end thereof mounted within said recesses, said wheel having lugs extending outwardly from the face thereof to the rear of said supports and engaged thereby, and bolts passing through said supports and wheel.
12. A cutting wheel for ensilage cutters having a series of clearing recesses formed in one face thereof and a cutting knife mounted over each ofvsaid recesses.
13. An ensilage cutter having a rotary knife carryingwheel provided with a diskshaped wheel body, a series of spaced pairs of knife supports mounted on one face of said wheel body, bolts for securing said sup ports upon said wheel body, said wheel body being provided with clearing recesses, knives carried by said supports, said wheel body having recesses spaced from said clearing recesses, and bosses formed on said supports extending into the last-mentioned recesses.
14. A cutting wheel for ensilage cutters having a series of recesses formed in one face thereof, a knife mounted over each of said recesses, each of said recesses having an inclined face diverging from a point in transverse alinement with the edge of the knife and terminating at a point to the rear of the knife.
