THOMAS BRADFORD, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED FIRE-PLACE FENDER AND A-IR-MO ISTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,575, dated January 1'7, 1888.
Application filed'Dccembcr '7, 1886. Serial No. 220,946. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS BRADFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Fire- Place Fender and Air-Moistener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is an improvement in a combined fire-place fender and air-moistener, the
"object being to provide a means whereby the atmosphere of a room or building may be moistened. This I accomplish by construct: ing a tank or vessel beneath the upper surface of the fender, provided with one or more escape-pipes, whereby the steam generated by the heat of the fire may escape into the room, together with certain other details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved fire-fender and air-rnoistener constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a front sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side sec iional elevation.
To put my invention into practice and give I the same bodily form, I provide a fire-fender, a, of any well-known construction, and construct beneath the upper surface of the same a tank orvessel, b, which I partly fill with water 0 through an opening, d, provided with a close'fitting cap, 6. At each end of this tank b, and in direct communication therewith, are two pipes, f, provided with a hinged joint, 9, and extending upward a short distance. These pipes f by means of the hinged joint 9 are capable of being revolved toward the fire-place when the same are not in active operation.
On the top to these pipes f, I place a perforated globe, i, through which the steam generated in the tank b may escape into the room.
In operation, water is placed inthe tank 12 and the pipes frevolved toward the front of the fender a. The heat from the fire-place radiating on the top of the fender a generates steam in the tank I), which, by means of the pipes f, escapes into the room through the perforated globe 6, thereby moistening the same.
By the use of this combined fire-fender and air-moistener the heat of the tire regulates the quantity of moisture escaping into the room.
\Vhen it is desired to decrease the moisture of the room, one or both of the perforated globes z are revolved directly in front of the fire-chamber, and by means of the natural draft of the chimney-flue the moisture escaping from the tank b is conducted or conveyed to the outside of the building.
By reference to an application which I have filed under date of January 24, 1887, Serial No. 225,387, it will be seen that I have shown therein a water-tank, pipeshavinghinge-joints for adjusting them with relation to the fireplace, and on top of these pipes perforated globes through which steam generated in the tank may pass. I therefore do not wish to claim such devices, broadly, in the present application.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination, with the fender a, of the water-tank below the upper surface thereof, a
feed-aperture provided with a cap, the outletpipes providedwith a joint, and the adjustable evaporators, substantially as described.
THOMAS BRADFORD. Witnesses:
