UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL TOBIN, OF BALDWVINSYILLE, NEW YORK.
APPARATUS FOR HEATING AND MOISTENING TOBACCO-HOUSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,965, dated February 5, 1881.
Application filed March 31,1883. (3'0 model.)
To all whom; it may concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL Town, of Baldwinsville, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Heating and Moistening Tobacco-Houses, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to control the heat and moisture of tobacco-assorting rooms, so as to maintain the tobacco constantly in proper condition to withstand the necessary handlingand assorting.
The invention is fully illustrated in the annexed drawing, which represents a sectional view of a tobacco-assorting room furnished with my improved apparatus for controlling the heat and moisture therein.
A represents a tobacco-assorting room.
B is a fire-pot or furnace of any desired shape.
0 is a magazine or chute, through which the fuel is introduced into the fire-pot B. This magazine is to be of ample size to contain sufiicient fuel to sustain the fire throughout the night, or from the end of one working-day to the beginning of the next, said magazine being so arranged and communicating with the fire-pot in such a manner as to automatically supply the necessary fuel thereto.
D denotes the water-heater, which may consist either of a water-jacket, a, surrounding the fire-pot, as shown in the drawing, or of a coi1pipe extended around the interior of the fire-pot.
E represents a steam-receiver in the form of a metallic tank, communicating with the water-heater by pipes b b, said tank being provided with aremovable cover, 0, to admit of introducing into the tank the requisite supply of water to maintain a current of water from the tank E through the lower pipe bto the water-heater D, and a return-current of steam from said heater through the upper pipe b to the tank E. From the cover 0 is extended a steam-duct,
d, the discharge end 6 of which is so arranged the steam into the tobacco-assorting room or out of the same, as illustrated, respectively, by full lines and dotted lines in the drawing, thus controlling the degree of moisture in the room. V
The vertical portion of the pipe d, I prefer to construct with a telescopic joint, 6', so as to allow the cover a to be raised off the receiver E when desired. By lifting said cover the steam is allowed to escape directly from the receiver into the assorting-room, which operation may be resorted to in case a rapid supply of steam is required in the room, the egress of steam from the receiver being regulated by lifting the cover a greater or less distance above the receiver.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a tobacco-assorting room, the combination of a stove or furnace, a water-heater connected therewith, a tank communicating with the water-heater by water-pipe and stean1- pipe, and a steam-distributing pipe extended from the tank and having its discharge end adapted to be turned to throw the steam either into or out of the sampling-room, substantially as described and shown.
2. The combination of the fire-pot B, inagazine G, water-heater D, steam-receiver E, removable cover 0, steam-duct (Z, provided with the telescopic joint 0, and having its discharge end adapted to be turned into or out of the assortingroom, substantially as described and shown, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 20th day of March, 1883.
MICHAEL TOBIN. {n s] \Vitnessesi C. H. DUELL, F. H. Games.
