Be it known that I, JAMES l. HARRIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Pittsylvaua, State of Virginia, have invented certain neu7 and useful Improvements in Screens, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in folding or rolling screens.

The object of my invention is to provide a screen which can be unrolled from a case or unfolded and adjusted at any angle, so as to partition off a portion of a room or apartment, as will more fully appear.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspectiveof my improved screen. Fig. 2 is a front view ofa portion of the casing in which the screen is rolled or folded when not in use. Fig. 3 is a side view of a portion of one of the central supports for the'screen. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the top of the screen-retaining cylinder.V Fig. 5 is a top or plan viewof the cylinder in which the screen is folded. A indicates the screen,which maybe of any suitable material, one end of which .is secured to a roller, B, said roller being suitably mounted in the cylinder or casing4 C. The roller B may be provided with a suitable spring, similar to those used in operating window blinds or curtains, so as to wind the screen ou the roller when it is desired to fold the screen out ofthe way.

The cylinder or box C may be made of any suitable height and size, and is provided with a removable head or cap, D, while the bottom of said cylinder is securely attached to the base E, said base being provided with suitablefeet, F, having apertures a, through which the nails or screws may be driven to hold the cylinder securelyin position; or the base E may be prowhich the screen is passed, and, as before intimated, the roller B is mounted in suitable bearings in the base E and cap D, so that when it is desired to remove the screen from the cylinder for cleaning the same or for any other purpose the cap D is unscrewed and thescreen lifted out.

H is a standard or support to Vwhich the other end of the screen is attached in any suitable manner, and is provided with handles I and feet or base K, the feet K being so formed that when the screen is rolled up they will fit close to the base E, so as not to occupy much room. y

In some instances long screens are required,

and in order to prevent the same from bagging or sagging down I support the same with one or moresuitablestandards, L. The stand ard L isv provided with a central longitudinal slot, M, through which the screen passes, and is provided with an open screw eye or slip, N, in the upper portion thereof, asshown in Figs. 1 and 3, through which the cord O, secured to the upper edge ofthe screen A, passes, and by which means the screen is held in position. A clip or eye, N, may be secured in the head D of the cylinder C, as shown in Fig. 2, so as lto hold and guide the screen as it is being wound on the roller B, and similar eyes or clips may be secured to the bottom of the support L and cylinder C, so as to guide the bottom of the screen, in which case a cord similar to the cord O is secured to the lower edge of the screen.

By having the central support, L, the screen can be placed at any angle, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, so that a bed, wash-stand, or any portion of the room which is desired to be private can be partitioned 0H, as is kdone with the bulky, cumbersome, and inconvenientfolding screens now in use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim,` and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

l. A folding or rolling screen of the characA ter described, consisting of a cylinder having a springactuated roller, to which one end of the screen is attached and into which said screen is wound, and a standard or support to` which the other end of the screen is secured,

whereby the screenis extended and heid nt any desired distance from the retaini11gcyiinder, as set forth.

2. A folding or rolling screen ofthe character described, consisting ofa cylinder in which the screen is Wound, a standard or support to which the other end of the screen is secured, und an intermediate standard or standards for supporting the screen,whercby the screen may be set at any angie, as set forth.

3. In :L screen of the character described, the screen A, provided with the cord O, in combination with thesnpports L, E, and H and clips N, as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The combination of the cylinder C, in which the screen is Wound, the springnctnated roller B, pivoted in said standard, and the rolling screen connected at one end to the springactuated roller B and at the other to the standard H, substantially as set forth.
