INVENTOR. ROLAND LONGARZO A T TORNEX amnq 4% l CONVERTIBLE PAD AND WRITING IMPLEMENT HOLDER This invention relates to a combined pad holder and writing implement holder which may be selectively converted from a device which can be adhered to the side of an instrument such as a telephone to a free standing device for use on the top of a desk or table.
It is an object of this invention to provide such a device which will be economical to manufacture and simple to. convert from an attachable device to a free standing device.
It is a further object of this invention to provide such a device which may either be free standing or attachable to a horizontal surface such as a desk or table.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the specification hereinbelow.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective;
FIG. 2 is a bottom plan view of the device shown in FIG. I;
FIG. 3 is a plan view of a strut means;
FIG. 4 is an end-elevational view of the strut meansshown in FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is a plan view of a converting bracket means;
FIG. 6 is an exploded end elevational view of the converting bracket means of FIG. 5;
FIG. 7 .is a side elevation of the FIG. 1;
FIG. 8 is a perspective view of another form of the invention; and
FIG. 9 is a side elevation of the form of invention shown in FIG. 8.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
device depicted in The invention comprises a convertible pad and writing implement holder. The invention has a main body portion 20 made of any suitable material, preferably a plastic material, comprising a pair of sides, a first side 22 and a second side 24, and a pair of ends, a first end 26 and a second end 28. The top of the body portion 20 is provided with a recessed portion 30 adapted to receive a pad 32; The pad 32 fits within the perimeters formed by first end 26 and portions of first side 22 and second side 24 and a stop means 34. The stop means 34 is behind the surface 36 of the body portion 20 and beneath edge 38 of surface portion 36. Thus, end 40 of pad 32 fits in the seat means 44 formed behind surface 36 abutting against stop 34. The other end 42 of the pad 32 fits inside first end 26 of the body portion 20.
The pad 32 is preferably bound by adhesive or other means known to the art at edge 40 so that the pages 46 can be lifted and removed from end 42 of the pad. In order to facilitate removal of a page 46 after a memorandum may have been jotted on it, end 26 of the device has pad page access means comprising a cutback 48 which permits the thumb or fingers of the user to grasp a page 46 with ease. This also facilitates the removal and replacement of the pad 32 in the device when necessary.
plernent holding means'comprising an extension 50 having an implement receiving opening 52 to hold a writing implement such as the pen 54. The body portion is provided with at least two accessory units such as a strut means 56 and a converting bracket means 58.
The converting bracket means 58 is provided with-an angled end portion 60 at a first end and an offset end portion 62 at a second end. Between its ends, the bracket 58 is provided with an adhesively coated surface 64 over which is placed a protective cover 66.
The strut means 56 may be provided with a pair of footed portions 68 and an end portion in the form of a neck portion 70. The body portion 20 is provided with a plurality ofslots on its undersurface 72. A first slot 74 is associated with the second end 28 of the body portion 20, and is located at said end, preferably in a medial position. Another slot 76 is provided at the underportion of body portion 20 near second side 24, and a third slot 78 is provided underneath body portion 20 in a generally central portion thereof.
In the invention as depicted in FIGS. I and 7 of the drawings, the converting bracket 58 has been installed with its offset end 62 inserted into slot 76 of the body portion 20 thereby providing an attachment bracket means 80. The attachment bracket means 80 comprises the converting bracket 58 (in position as described) with its adhesively coated side 64 facing outwardly. One may then pull off protective paper 66 and press the adhesively coated side -64 against the side of a telephone (not shown) or other instrument or other surface to adhesively attach the pad and writing implement holder to such desired surface.
In the form of invention set up in FIGS. 8 and 9 of the drawings, the converting bracket 58 is placed by slide fitting end 60 in slot 74 of body portion 20, and the strut means 56 is slide fitted with its neck portion in slot 78. The invention set up in this form is free standing as shown in FIGS. 8 and 9 of the drawings. In the free standing form of the invention, the protective paper 66 is left in place or if it is desired to affix'the invention to a surface, the paper 66 may be removed and the invention may be adhesively secured to a surface by means of the adhesive 64. The converting bracket means 58 may be provided with buttresses 82 which mayv act as a strengthening means for the device if desired.
The term slide fitting" as used hereinabove means a friction fit which can be selectively removed by the application of some pressure when it is desired to convert the device from one form to another. It is also possible to provide for an extremely tight fit so that oncethe choice of the form of device is made, it will remain as a fairly permanent construction.
While I have described my invention in its preferred forms, there are other fonns which it may take without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I, therefore, desire to be protected for all forms coming within the claims hereinbelow.
