WAGON-BRAKE BLOCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,404, dated January 10, 18538.

Application filed October 19, 1887. Serial No. 252,818. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, COMMODORE PERRY BATEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Exira, in the county of Audubon and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Brake Blocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I

My invention relates to improvements in wagon-brakes; and the object thereof is to provide simple and effective means for securing to said brake the leather facing-strip.

To this end my invention consists in ablock provided with a yoke, which latter carries clamping-plates, all as will be more particularly described in the specification, and pointed out in the claims. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a plan view, but showing the yoke in section; Fig. 3, a detail showing the clamping-plates.

A represents the block, 13 the yoke, and D the clamping-plates.

The plates D have rough contacting faces (1, and are provided at their ends with notches d d, and are adapted to be carried by and to slide freely between-the arms I) of the yoke B. The yoke B is attached to the block at b and. is provided with set-screws b.

To operate the device it is only necessary to slightly separate the plates D, insert between them the end of the facing-strip G, and then by means of the set-screws b firmly clamp the whole together. The rough faces of the plates D will insure a firm grip on the strip 0, and thus avoid any liability of the latter being displaced or withdrawn by the frictional contact of the wheel.

The facing-strip O is preferably made of 5 leather; but any other material that will make a good frictional contact with the wheel may be employed.

In Fig. 1 the clamping device is only shown at one end of the block, whereas in practice thereis one at each end; but, being duplicates, further showing is deemed unnecessary.
