PATENT OFFicE.
AMBROSE HYDE, OF LIMA, NEW YORK.
` IMPROVEMENT IN SHiJTTER-l-'Asna'nllnos.y
" Specification-forming' part of Letters Patent No. 37,625, dated February 10, 1863.
Be itknown that I, AMBaosE HYmnoi' hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part' Figure 1` is .a central section of a shutter as proved fastening Fig. 2,. a perspective view of the parts composingthe upper fastening,
p ,irts composing the Iowerfastenin g, detached. Like letters in,djicate'` corresponding parts in all the figures.
' The shutter Afisof ordinary shapeand con-` of the window ],is effected by-mea'ns of a as that in general usefaej.
In the simplest ordinaryarrang'ement the lower fastening consists 'of a screw bolt passthe catch. In a .corresponding position in the eyel is made of sufficient size. to allow the catch' to rise in it to a proper degree to unlock the device. Instead of this eye, it is apparent that a rigid inverted catch .might be used with the .same effect.
.At a suitable position under the rear or' inner-end of the catch E is situated a horizontal baseor projection, I, projecting to about the saine extent as the end ofthe catch above, as
clearlyrepresented in Figs. l and 3. Between the base andy catch, in. the rear of the pi vot' of thelatter, is situated a coiled spring,'g or its equivalent, of sufficient stiffness to keep the head of the catchdown to engage with the ofthe catch is raised for disen gagin g the parts.
.In the rear extremity ofthe catch E is jointed a detent` or lock-catch, K, having a turning motionof half a circle or more in its ing inward from the shutterthrough the Woodbearing, so that it can hang pendent or be work and having'a nut lscre'wiinegpon its end. In the use of this device -it fisfdifficult for asingle person to secure the' shutter,- one being.. required to hold the same in place. on the outside while another turns thenut of the bolt on the inside. The action of securin g is also very slow; and when the nut is detached'for re moving the shutter it is liable to become lost,
It is the object loffmy invention to obviateV these, dificulties 'by producing afastening which will holdthe shutter by a'catch that is at all times secure, and by the use of which of time and lab'or.
To this end the wood-.work behind the shutter has afhole or passage, a, through which `suitable length for the purpose designed, and pivoted at b most conveniently to a metallic plate, G, lby which it is secured in place by means of screws or otherwise. The forward or outer end of the catch is formed intoa head, made Wedge-shaped or :rounding on its under side, as represented at c', and vhavin g a shoulturned up in a self-supporting position. The
lower end of this detent is forned into aurightangled head, k, and it bears just'such relation to the catch E andbase. I that when, the former is engaged with the eye'of the shutter, and consequently when the rear end of said catch is in its highest position, the bottom lr .of the detent shuts in and rests on the upper surface of the endof the base, as indicated by 'black lines in Figs. l and 2 5 but when the` vshutter is disengaged from the catch, and the rear end of the latter is in its lowest position,
the upper edge, t', of the head of the detent catches under the end of the base, to hold it in that position, as indicated by red linesin.v Fig. l. When it is desirable for the catch to remain in position to engage automatically with the eye of the shutter, the detent is raised inthe position indicated by dotted lines iu Fig. I.
. ln securing 'the shut-ter its upper'end is first fastened by engaging the tongue D with the socket C. The lowerend is then carried inward till the bottom of the eye f strikes against the -Wedging headof the catch, .which springs intoplace, securing the parts together. The
der or hook, d, at'thepropcr position to netmas-M rihe dctentthus answers a double purpose,
and renders the device most effective and safe, While a single person is enabled to perform all the action ofsecuring and removngg,V the shutter without ditliculty and with great cconomY of' time and, labor. The device is very cheap and in simple form for'. the trade, and can be Iapplied to ordiuarT shutters in general use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The double-actint;` detent K, in combination with the catch E and base I, when so arranged as to either lock the said catch in a rigid position to hold lche shutter in place or to retain it disengaged While the shutter is removed, and operating substantially as herein specified. l
ln Witness whereof' I have hereunto signed 4my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AMBROSE HYDE.
