Description

T. H. ROBERTS'. Stove-Leg Fastener.
ILPETEIS. PHOTO-UTNOGRAPMER. WASHINGTON, D C.
IINTTnn STATES PATENT Ormes.
THEODOR H. ROBERTS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO MICHIGAN STOVE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
STOVE-LEG FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,198, dated April 6, 1880.
Application filed February 9, 1880.
llo all whom it may concern y Be it known that LIHEODOR H. ROBERTS, of the city f Detroit, county of Wayne, and
State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Automatic Stove-Leg Fasteners, ot'
Which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for securing legs to the bottoms of stoves and securely locking them in place; and the invention consists, tirst, in the employment, in combination with the bottom plate and leg, of' a pivotallysuspended and automatically-working hook from the bottom, which, when the leg is in place, will pass through a slot therein, and by gravity engage with the leg and hold it in place; second, in combination with the hook, leg, and bottom, a screw and supplemental plate, said plate being designed to inclose and cover the hook, and secured to the top of the bottom plate of the stove by means of' the screw, which also passes through the tang ot' the leg and forms, if desired, au`additional fastening', as more fully hereinafter described. Figure lis a vertical section through the stove-leg and that portion of' the bottom to which it is attached. Fig. 2 is aplan vieu7 of the section of the base-plate with the cap removed. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the hook. Fig. et is a plan view of one-halt' ofthe under side ot' the cap and one-half the under side ofthe base-plate. Fig. 5 is a perspective of the upper end ofthe stove-leg, showing the tang thereof provided with an elongated slot, through which the bolt and hook pass.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a section of the bottom plate of a stove provided With a bolt-hole, a, and a lateral recess, b, also 4o' vwith a sink, c, the bottom of which forms a loop, d. The leg B is made with a tang, C, the rear end of which is curved, as shown at e, and with a stop, f. This tang is provided With an elongated slot, g, and when in place the curved portion passes through the sink o, above the loop d, until the stop f rests against the front edge of said loop. The bail h of the hook D rests in the recess b and projects downward through the slot t' in the base-plate, and Wh en the leg is inserted, as described, the hook 5o engages with the end ot the slot g and under face ofthe tang of the leg, as shown in Fig-.1.
E represents a cap or supplemental plate cast with a T-shaped chamber, k, upon its under face, to furnish rooin for the action of the hook D. This plate is provided with a bolt'hole, m, which, when the plate is in place, is coincident with the hole a in the base-plate.
lVhen the parts are in place, as described, the bolt f and nut u secure the cap and base- 6o plate together; and, if desired, the bolt may be long enough' to pass through the slot g in the tang of the foot, and another nut, o, be employed, as shown in Fig. 1, as an additional fastening to the leg.
What I claim as my invention isl. In combination with a stove-leg provided with a slot through the tang thereof, a hook pivotally suspended from the base-plate of' a stove and adapted to automatically engage by gravity with the tang of the leg, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In combination with a stove-leg provided with a slot through the tang thereof, and a hook pivotally suspended from the base-plate 7 5 of a stove and adapted to automatically engage by gravity With the tang ot' the leg, a plate or cap, E, provided with a T-shaped chamber, It, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In combination With a stove-leg provided with a slot through the tang thereof, and a hook pivotally suspended from the base-plate of a stove and adapted to engage by gravity with the tang of the leg, a plate or cap, E, pro- 85 vided with aT-shaped chamber, It, and a bolt, j', and nuts a o, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
