Description

(ModeL) U. R. HARVEY.
Last-Blgok Fastener.
Patented May 11, 1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
URIAS R. HARVEY, OF PERLEE, IOWA.
LAST-BLOCK FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,429, dated May 11, 1880.
Application filed March 18, 1880. (Model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, URIAS It. HARVEY, of Perlee, in the county of Jefferson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Last-Block Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and useit, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in last-block fasteners; and it consists in attaching a spring-plate to the upper end of the block, and bending the rear end of the plate downward, so as to make it fit in a groove or recess formed in the top of the last, whereby a fastening is formed which will hold the block securely in place, and yet allow it to be remot'ed without the trouble of loosening or moving any parts of the fastening, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
A represents a last of any suitable construction, and which has a recess or groove, 0, cut vertically in its top just at that point where the upper end of the block D ends. Secured to the upper end of this block, by means of screws or other suitable fastenings, is a springplate, F, which has its lower end turned abruptly downward, so as to form a spring-tongue, I, which tongue fits in the groove or recess made in the top of the last. This turned-down part of the plate does not extend vertically downward, but is inclined slightly forward, so that when it is forced into the vertical slot the tension of the spring-plate will be brought to bear upon the side of the groove or slot, and thus hold the block securely in position.
The advantage which this fastening possesses over others is, that the block can be instan tly removed from or fastened in place without having to unfasten or loosen a latch, sliding plate, or fastenings of any kind. The shoe-maker has simply to catch his hook in the hole in the block and pull upward, when the spring-plate will be loosened, and in fastening the block in position he has but to push URIAS ROSS HARVEY.
