UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRIDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,583; dated February 3. 1F63.
Toalla/'hom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, A. H. LANGIIOLZ, of Chicago, Cook county, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bridles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, referencebein g had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
.The nature of my invention -vconsists in a A nose-strap to be attached by hooks to the horses bit or buckled to the bit. l
A represents the .headstall; B, the throat- E rep! each vend, the points of the hooks bending outward. The loop and buckle H, at oneend, is for the purpose of lengthening or tightening the band or strap E. One hook G- is inserted into the slot or hole at. top of bit D on the oueside. The band E is then passed round the back side of the horses jaw and through the loopof the headstall A and around the nose of the horse, and thence again through the loop of the headstall on the opposite side of the horses head and around the back side ot' jaw, and the othery hook G is inserted in the hole or slot at the opposite side ofthe bit D.
The strap E is thentightened at the buckle H, which binds the horses nose and jaw comfortably, yet answering two purposes-that of a nose-band and curb-chain. As the rider draws the reins G the top part of bit is pressed Witnesses:
forward, and the band E becomesself-tightening, andas a loop binds-the jaw and nose both tightly at the same time, which cheeks the horse from plunging,'rearing, or running oft', at the Same time his mouth is not lacerated and injured, as is usually the case by the use ofthe old and severe curbchain. The old curb-chain not only frets a horse, but has so frequently injured his jaw to such an extent as to prevent his eating his food for several days.. This band Ev gives relief to the horses jaw, and at the same time it draws the nose and ja'w regularly, so as to put the horse coinpletely under the control of the rideror driver. My invention being oi' the greatest utility in driving, as Well as riding, my purpose is to attach this band E to both riding and driving bridles. Buckles may be used instead of the hooks, but I find the hooks more convenient, and to answer cavalry bridles' better.
I do not `claim a nose and jawstrap as is usually attached -to the headstall of bridles; but
What I claim as Iny invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the noseand jaw .band
v E with the hook G at each' end,.when arranged with the headstall and fastened by the hooks to the top, of the bit as herein described, for the purposes setforth. I l
