R. A. G. LORENZ.
- CLAMP FOR STRINGS. No. 375,710. Patented' Dec. 27, 1887.
Mammalia@ I/ 7% f Amm mi PATENT OFFICE..
ROBERT A. G. LORENZ, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
CLAMP FOR STRINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,710, dated December 27, 1887.
Application iilell May 1l, i387. Serial No. 237,811. (No model.)
To all whom it mayL con-cern: I
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. G. LORENZ,
'of the city, county, and State of New York,
. strings, Snc., the hollow tapering body of which is provided with interior curved ribs at both sides, and with a tapering and serrated key that clamps the strings wedged in between the sides of the clamp-body and the key.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l representsthe bottom View of the tail-piece of astringed instrument with my improved clamp for the string ,by which the tail-piece isattached to the body ofthe instrument. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the tailpiece and clamp, drawn on a larger scale; and Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section of the clamp detached from said tail-piece.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of my improved clamp for strings, which body is made in tapering shape and preferably provided with a convex bottom and flat top.
The sides of the body A are provided with interior curved or thickened ribs, a a, which, in connectionwith a tapering key, B, that is in serted at the narrower end of the body A, serve to firmly clamp the string ends ci d to the body of the clamp. The tapering key B is toothed or serrated at the sides, so as to bite the strings and increase the clamping action ofthe same on the body A. The key B is in- 4o serted with its thinner end at the narrower end of the body A, so that the greater the strain on the string the more the keyis drawn intot-he body of the clamp and the tighter are the string ends clamped by the interior side ribs, a a, of the body A and the tapering key. My improved clamp is more especially in` tended for the gut strings by which the tail'- piece of stringed instruments is attached to the body of the same, in which case the clamp is seated in a recess at the. under side of said tail end and the strings passed through con necting-holes of the same, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The clamp may, however, also be used for all other purposes for which an effective string-clamp is required.
Having, thus described my invention, I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a body having a recess the width of which decreases from the ends toward a point between the ends, said recess serving to receive strings, one resting against each side edge of the recess, and of a tapered key having its edges serrated, the teeth being inclined in the reverse of the direction of the string, and the smaller end of the key being at that end of the recess toward which the key is drawn by the strain in the string, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I` have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT A. G. LORENZ.
