COMBINED WHIP AND CANE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,485, dated December 27, 1887.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OWEN GODWARD, of New Albany, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement-in Combined Whip and Cane, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my improvement is to provide a combined whip and cane whereby greater strength, simplicity, and convenience in its double use is obtained than usual.

I will first describe in4 detail a combined whip and cane embodying my improvement, and then point out Ithe various features of the improvement in claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of vreference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side View of a combined whip and cane embodying my improvementI when extended to form a whip. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section ofthe said combined whip and cane when contracted for use as a cane. The handle A of the combined whip and cane is composed of a tubular body, B, of 'sheet metal, preferably iron, tapering toward its farther'end and covered by a suitable wrapping,O, such as that ordinarily used in covering whip-stocks.

When the article is used as a cane, the handle A completely incloses a tapering whipsection, D, having the usual lash vand made as an ordi-y nary whip of a whalebone or other iexible core covered with a suitable wrapping. When in use as a whip, the whip-section D is drawn outward until its inner larger end binds snugly in the smaller open end of the handle A.

A metallic ferrule, E, is received on the inner end of the whip-section D, and a cylindrical block, F, of leather, rubber, or an equivalent frictional material, is also placed on said end outside the ferrule E, a screw, G, being passed through the block F and ferrule E into the core of the whipvsection D to strongly unite the parts.

The frictional block F adheres closely to the interior of the metallic tubular body B, so as to keep the whip-section firmly in place when extended, While the metallic ferrule E acts as a gradual stop to prevent the whip-section from being drawn out too far, and thus binding too tightly. Y

The larger end of the tubular handle A is closed by a detachable plug` H, a pin, I, being passed transversely through the handle and plug to secure the plug in place.

The outer end of the plug His formed with a socket, J to receive the neck of a rubber or other suitable block, K, when the article is in use as a whip, the neck of said block being also fitted to the smaller open end of the handle A, so as to serve both as a plug and as a ferrule when the article is in use as a cane, asindicated in Fig. 2.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a combined whip and cane, the combination,with the inner tapering whip-section, D, of a ferrule, E, on the thicker end of the same, a block, F, of rubber, leather, or the like outside the ferrnle, and a screw, G, passed through the block F and ferrule' E into the whip-section D, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a combined whip and cane, the combination of a tubular handle inclosing a telescopic whip-section, a plug closing one end of the tubular handle and having asocket, and a removable plug or ferrule having a neck adapted to the socket and to the other end of the tubular handle, substantial] y as described.
