OASSANDER GILMORE, OF NORTH RAYN HAM, (ADMINISTRATOR OF OTHNIEL GILMORE, DEOEASED,) ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EVERETT D. GOD- FREY, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LAST FOR SOLE-*LEVELING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,349, dated December 27, 1887.
Application filed October 11.1887. Serial No. 251,980. (No model.)
T on whom it may concern:
Be it known that OTHNIEL GILMORE, deceased, formerly of' North Raynham, county of Bristol, State of Massachusetts, did invent an Improvement in Lasts for Sole-Leveling Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is aspecification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to enable a last or jack to be made longer or shorter in order that it may be used in connection with boots or shoes of different lengths.
The last or jack herein shown is especially I 5 adapted for use in connection with a sole-leveling machine such as shown and described in United States Patent'No. 344,650, granted to O. Gilmore, dated June 29, 1886. In accordance with this invention the last is provided with a detachable heel-piece, it consisting, as
herein shown, of a concave-convex plate provided with means to fasten it to the last, said means being preferably two arms which clasp the side of the last at its heel portion. This 2 5 heel-piece may be attached to the last proper tolengthen it or removed therefrom to shorten it, and when desired to increase the length of the last more than one size a heel-piece provided with a pin or projection to constitute a stop is employed.
Figure 1 in side elevation and partial sec tion represents a last or jack provided with a detachable heel-piece embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section in the line :0 of the last or jack shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the heel piece removed from the-last; and Fig. 4 is a like view of amodified form of heel-piece without apin, to thus enable the heel-piece to bear against the heel of the last.
The last or jack a is and may be of any usual construction capable of being used in connection with a sole-leveling machine or any other machine for boot or shoe work.
The detachable heel-piece b, which may be 5 varied in shape according to the curvature it is desired to give to the heel of the last, is, as herein shown, provided with fastening devices consisting of arms 0 c, which enter suitable grooves cut in the sides of the last, as shownin Figs. 1 and 2. The heel-piece, when the same is to be used to increase the length of the last more than one size, will preferably have screwed into or attached to it a pin or projection, as (Z, which may be of any desiredlength, the said pin abutting against the heel of the last; but in case the last is to be increased in length for but one size, then the pin or pro jection (I may be omitted and the inner side of the heel-piece may be brought directly against the heel of the last, the thickness of the heelpiece in such case making up for one size of boot or shoe.
' \Vhat is claimed is- 1. The last or jack 0, combined with a de- 6 tachable heel-piece, b, adapted to be secured to and against the heel of the last to increase its length, substantially as described.
2. The last or jack a, combined with a detachable heel-piece, b, having arms 0 and a pin or projection, d, to abut against the heel of the last, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OASSANDER GILMORE,
Administrator of the estate of Othm'el Gilmore.
