Definitions

  • a device for cutting off any length from a carpet web 4 5' '3"/ 4' comprising a section barwith a slidable gripping jaw at both extremities for co operation with a border of the web, further comprising a cutting member slidable [58] Field of Search 269/55; 833/648, 649, 83/650, 485, 454, 455 References Cited UNITED STATES PATENTS along said bar.
  • My invention relates to a device for cutting off any length from a carpet web, said apparatus comprising a frame with means for rotatably supporting at least one carpet roll, in addition to a displaceable cutting means and a guide for said cutting means.
  • Such a device is known from the Dutch Patent application No. 6911620 by means of which it is possible to cut off so-called wall-to-wall carpeting.
  • the size of this device is considerable and it is very laborious to move said device if one wishes to cut off a piecefrom another carpet roll.
  • My invention aims at providing an improvement in this respect and at offering the possibility of cutting off any desired piece of carpeting with a leight weight and simple apparatus, which at the same time requires a minimum of manpower.
  • the guide consists of a removable beam or section bar provided at each end with a gripping jaw'for co-operation with a border of the carpet web, and said cutting member being slidable along said bar.
  • FIG. 1 shows a view in perspective of the entire device.
  • FIG. 2 is a view of a gripping jaw.
  • FIG. 3 is also a view of the cutting means.
  • FIG. 4 shows on an enlarged scale a longitudinal section of the carpet web with the three main elements of the device.
  • the device comprises a frame I provided with means (not shown) for rotatably supporting at least one, and in the present instance three carpet rolls 2. From the uppermost roll a web 3 extends downwards. A predetermined length has to be cut from said web which is done with the aid of a cutting member 4 (see FIG. 3) which is slidable along a guide 5.
  • Said guide is of the profile or section bar type and is formed like a box plate girder (see FIG. 4) having at two opposite sides a channel extending along the entire length of the bar 5.
  • the cutting member 4 comprises a sliding block 7 which is of a complementary shapewith respect to the channel 6.
  • two gripping jaws 8 are slidable along the bar 5 such that each gripping jaw can engage the bordering of the carpet web 3.
  • a steel tape 9 has been mounted. With this tape it is possible to check whether the section bar 5 is parallel to the floor, in other words accurateiy normal to the longitudinal direction of the web 3.
  • Each gripping jaw 8, like the cutting means 4, is equipped with a sliding block 7 adapted to engage the sides of a channel 6 of the section bar 5 (see FIG. 4).
  • the device operates as follows:
  • the required web length is unreeled from the selected roll and the spot is marked where the cutting has to be made.
  • the section bar 5 is secured by means of the gripping jaws 8 on the web of carpet 3 such that the knife It) of the cutting member 4 is situated at the correct level.
  • the distance down to the floor is measured with the aid of the steel tape 9 (left hand tape in FIG. I).
  • This same distance is then measured at the other side with the steel tape 9 provided at that side, the end of the section bar 5 being displaced until said bar is accurately horizontal.
  • the cutting member 4 can be moved along the bar 5 and the length of carpet is cut off.
  • the cutting member 4 comprises a handle 11 with which it can easily be slid along the section bar 5. Furthermore there is provided in the cutting member a guard 12 into which the knife projects. Consequently any unintentional damage to the other carpet roll is not possible.
  • Each gripping jaw 8 comprises a handle 13 for opening the jaw against the action of a spring I4. By means of said handle the gripping jaw can also be moved along the section bar 5 for adjustment to the width of the carpet web 3.
  • the apparatus is' easily displaceable and may be moved towards each carpet roll;
  • the carpet web can be cut off dead square (or it desired according to a predetermined angle);
  • the apparatus may be easily adapted to any width of the carpet
  • section bar is constituted by a box plate girder having at two opposite sides a channel extending along the entire length of the bar, a complementary sliding block of the cutting member on the one hand and of both gripping jaws on the other hand being adapted to slide in said channel.
