SCARF-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 37 5,174, dated December 20, 1887.

Be it known that I, EDWARD MAZATIs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Scarfs, Neckties, &c., of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved fastener for searfs, neckties, and other neck-wear, by means of which the scarf or other article is readily attached to the collar-button and retained thereon without being liable to get detached therefrom; and the invention consists of a scarf or other article of neck-wear, the body of which is provided with a guideplate having guide-loops or keepers made integral therewith, and of a metallic strap guided in said keepers and provided at the upper end with a loopshaped enlargement that is contracted at the upper part and wider at the lower part, so as to be placed over the head of the collar-button, the shank of said strap being provided with holes that are engaged by a fixed locking-stud of the guide-plate, as will appear more fully hereinafter, and finally be pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a rear elevation of a scarf with my improved fastening device. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line a: m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the guide-plate and strap, shown as detached from the scarf.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a scarf or other article of neck-wear, to the shield B of which is attached a metallic guide-plate, G, which is enlarged at the upper part, so as to form a kind of bridge, and which is provided with guide-loops or keepers b I), that are stamped up integral with the body' of the guideplate 0, respectively, at its upper and lower ends. The upper guide-loop or keeper, b, is made wider than the lower loop, 1;, so as to form at the same time a socket for the enlarged loop-shaped upper end, (1, of a metallic strap, D, that is guided in the loops or keepers b b. The loop-shaped upper end, (I, is made contracted at-its upper part and wider at its lower part, so as to permit the collarbutton to be inserted into thelower part,while the upper contracted part fits over the shank of the same.

The shank of the strap D is provided with holes (1, which are engaged by a fixed stud, e,

that is riveted to or formed integral with the L body of the guide-plate C, said stud locking the strap D in position.

WVhen it is desired to attach the fastener to the collarbntton, the strap D is released from the locking stud or catch e, which is readily accomplished. by pulling the lower end of the strap away from the scarf in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2. The shank of the strap is thereby bent so as to clear the stud 6, when the strap may be readily moved in upward direction in the keepers of the guideplate 0, so as to project above the wider upper part of the guide-plate and above the upper edge of the scarf and permit the convenient passing of the loopshaped upper end of the strap D over the head of the collar-button. By pulling the strap D downward the contracted portion of the loop-shaped upper end, (2, of the strap D passes over the shank of the collar-button and is retained on the same, while one of the holes d at the middle part of the strap D is engaged by the stud e, and the strap D thereby locked to the guide-plate. A stop, f, on the lower part of the strap D abuts against the lower keeper, b, so that the strap cannot be pulled down farther than required for the proper interlocking of the locking device.

WVhen the strap D is pulled downward and locked to the guide-plate O, the loop at is retained on the collar button and prevented from getting detached therefrom, as the lower wider part of the loop (Z is drawn into the upper keeper, 1), as shown in Fig. 3. \Vhen the scarf is to have more play on the collar -but ton, the lower hole d is engaged by a locking-pin, e, while when it is desired to have less play for the scarf the upper hole d is used for engagement with the locking-pin e.

In either case the loop -shaped upper end of the strap D is prevented from disengaging the collar-button, so that the reliable connection with the same, is obtained by the simple and easily-operated means described.

I am aware that a necktie-fastener comprising a looped guide'plate, a perforated sliding strap, a lever pivoted in ears in the guideplate, and a spring for holding said lever normally in closed position in one of the holes of said strap is not new; but that construction is complicated and renders the fastener comparatively expensive. In my necktie-fastener the pivoted lever, the ears in which it has its bearings, and the spring for actuating it are all dispensed with, the catch on the guideplate consisting solely of a short fixed stud, which may be struck up from the body of the plate, whereby this fastener can be produced very cheaply.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The necktie-fastener herein described, consisting of the guide-plate C, for attachment to the shield of the scarf or other article of neckwear, provided with transverse loops b b and with the fixed locking-stud e, and a sliding strap passing through the loops in said guideplate, said strap having a button -loop at its upper end, a stop at its lower end, and a series of holes along its length with which said stud engages, substantially as described.
