Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL KEELER, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPLE-MILLS, &C
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,510, dated January 27, 1863.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL KEELER, of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mode for Constructing the Toot-hed Crushers on Cylinders for Apple- Mills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l shows a perspective view of the machine, the crank-handle F for driving the cogged wheel A and pinion B. This latter is on the same shaft, Gr,-which gives motion to the cylinder D and fly or balance wheel E, (the latter may also have a turning-handle, if desirable.) The compound teeth on the cylinder or crusher D operate the other cylinder, C, which moves with its independent shaft, and is not connected with the driving-wheel A. Fig. 2 shows the end of the cylinders and a portion of the side. Fig. 3 illustrates the angles occupied by the teeth a a, ledges c b b c, and beveled sides d. Fig. 4 shows their contact or relative position, being segments of the cylinders, and may be set closer or more remote.
The drawings clearly illustrate the manner of constructing the compoundly-toothed crushers across the face longitudinally, as well as around the circumference on their ends. I divide the circle into fifteen parts of twentyfour degrees each. The outer teeth occupy eight degrees, the side ledges, c b b c, three degrees, and the beveled sides d each ve degrees, as shown by Fig. 3. This arrangement of the teeth or crushers in both cylinders of alike diameter and length, C D, answers also in place of cogs, so that the speed obtained by the pinion B is imparted equally to the Crushers D, acting upon C on its independent shaft. It is evident that ifconnected with the larger cogged wheel A (though their direction is the same) the motionwould be unequal with that connected with the pinion B, yet by reversing the position power will be gained by the loss of speed, and the crushing operation the same. The apples are readily grasped by this arrangement, carried between the teeth, and eftectually crushed into a pulp ot' 'such a consistency as to render the expressing of the juice or cider easy and effectual. Roughening the sides a of the teeth will aid in feeding the mill.
I am aware that there is no novelty in the frame-work and cogged wheels A B and hopper H, and that grooved, tangential, and luted cylinders have been used, both vertically and horizontally placed, nor do I claim such; but I am not aware that any have ever been used constructed in the manner herein set forth.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The combination and construction of th doubly or compound toothin g of the crushingcylinders O D, made in the manner and for the purpose specified.
' SAMUEL KEELER. Witnesses:
