To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT L. TREESE, citizen of the United States, residing at Cushing, in the county of Payne and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanylng drawing.
This invention relates to cotton presses of the type of which each has a plurality of rollers inclosing a cylindrical space in which a cylindrical bale is formed. In presses of this type it is necessary for some of the rollers to be movable to permit the bale to be disengaged; These movable rollers are usually mounted on a movable frame sectlon and this section must be very firmly secured in place when the baling operation is carried on.
The object of my invention is to provide in a press of the type above referred to improved means for locking the movable frame section and the movable rollers in their normal operative positions.
My improved features are well adapted for that shown and described in my Patent No. 980,706, dated January 3, 1911, and in the drawings, for purposes of illustration, I have shown a press similar to that shown in the said patent. I desire it to be understood, however, that my invention is not limited to the exact construction shown, but may be used with other presses for which it is adapted.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of a press embodying the inven' tion, the view being partly in section along the line 11 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the mechanism for controlling the open ing and closing of the press, parts of the press being also shown in section along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side view showing the lower parts of the press and the locking devices; ig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view showing one of the locking device's; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view showing one of the elements of one of the locking devices; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view taken along the line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the main frame elements of the press. These use in connection with a press such as 1, 1 represent are positioned at the ends and are secured to the base or foundation members 2, 2.

Some of these rollers are carried by the fixed frame sections 1, 1 and others by the movable frame sections 3, 3. Each roller g) carries a drive pinion 6, and all of the pinlons normally mesh with a central drive gear Twhich is connected to receive power by means of a belt wheel 8. The belt wheel 8 and the gear wheel 7 serve as driving mechanism for all of the rollers. It will be seen that when the movable rollers are moved their pinions are disengaged from the gear 7, but will be immediately reengaged upon the return of the rollers to normal position.
For moving the movable sections 3, 3 of the frame each of them is connected to a rack 9. Preferably, these racks are rigidly connected to the respective sections and are curved to be concentric with the pivotal axes of the sections at 4. 10, 10 are pinions mounted upon a longitudinal shaft 11 and engaging respectively with the said racks 9, 9. The shaft 11 carries a worm wheel 12 which meshes with a Worm 13 on a transverse shaft 14. Mounted on the shaft 14: are friction disks 15, 15 between which there is a cone friction driving pulley 16. The cone pulley 16 is mounted on a shaft 17, which is driven by means of the belt 18 and the belt wheel 19. The shaft 17 is provided at 20 with a bearing in an eccentrically mounted sleeve. This sleeve carries an arm 21 which is connected to a hand lever 22 by means of a link 23. An operator, by moving the lever 22, can rock the sleeve through which the shaft 17 extends, and can in this way move the drive pulley 16 to the right or to the left to bring it into engagement with one or the other of the two friction disks 15, 15. it will be obvious that when one disk is engaged the shaft 14 will be rotated in one direction, and that when the other disk is en gaged the shaft will be rotated in the other direction.
The worm and worm wheel 13 and 12 serve as locking means for preventing the rotation of the shaft 11 by means of forces applied to the pinions 10, 10. In this way the press is automatically locked closed against any small pressures tending to open it. But experience has demonstrated that the pressure in a press of this type when cotton is being baled is so great that it is not safe to place final reliance upon the relatively small teeth of the pinion and the rack. In order to relieve these small teeth of the pressure incident to the operation of the press I have provided adjacent each pinion a large supplemental tooth 23. Preferably, as shown in Fig. 5, this tooth is formed integrally with the pinion, and I find it advantageous to construct it with an approximately spiral outline, as indicated. Connected to each of the frame sections 3, 3 is a depending lug 2-1 adapted to be engaged by the tooth 23 when the frame sections reach their normal positions. These large heavy teeth 23, 23, by their engagement with the lugs 24, 24, take the strain tending, during operation of the press, to move the sections 3, 3. The strain is transmitted to the shaft 11 and from the shaft is transmitted to the worm wheel 18 which automatically locks the shaft against rotation, and'hence automatically locks the press in closed position.
hat I claim is:
1. The combination in a cotton baling press of a plurality of rollers arranged to normally inclose a cylinder, a roller carrying frame having a movable section by means of which some of the rollers can be movedout of their normal positions, driving mechanism for the rollers, means for moving the said movable section out of and into normal position, and a device supplemental to the moving means for locking the movable frame section in its normal operative position, the said device being connected to the moving means to be automatically moved into and out of operative position thereby.
2. The combination in a cotton baling press of a plurality of rollers arranged to normally inclose a cylinder, a roller carrying frame having a movable section by means of which some of the rollers can be moved out of their normal positions, driving mechanism for the rollers, a rack con nected wih the said movable section for moving it out of and into normal position, a rotatable driving pinion engaging the rack, a tooth rotatable with the pinion and supplemental to the teeth thereof, and a lug connected with the movable frame section and positioned to be automatically engaged by the rotatable supplemental tooth when the movable frame section is'in normal position.

4. The combination in a cotton baling press of a plurality of rollers arranged to normally inclose a cylinder, a roller carrying frame having a movable section by means of which some of the rollers can be moved out of thei'r normal positions, driving mechanism for the rollers, a rack connected with the said movable section for moving it out of and into normal position, a rotatable driving pinion engaging the rack, a tooth rotatable with the pinion and supplemental to the teeth thereof, a lug connected with the movable frame section and positioned to be automatically engaged by the ro tatable supplemental tooth when the movable frame section'is in normal position, and a worm and worm wheel for transmitting power to the pinion and the supplemental tooth and for automatically locking them against retrograde movement.
5. The combination in a cotton baling press of a plurality of rollers arranged to normally inclose a cylinder, a roller carrying frame having a movable section by means of which some of the rollers can he moved out of their normal positions, driving mechanism for the rollers, two oppositely disposed similar racks connected with the said movable section for moving it out 'of and into normal position, two rotatable driving pinions engaging the racks respectively, two teeth rotatable respectively with the pinions and supplemental to the teeth thereof, and two lugs connected with the movable frame section and positioned to be automatically engaged respectively by the rotatable supplemental teeth when the movable frame section is in normal position.
