  • Brushes are known in which a rigid plastic part holds a shallow brush element which consists of a flexible carrier, for example, a texile fabric or the like. Such a brush element can be bonded onto a rigid base plate. However, the folding over of the margin of the material around the edges of the base plate is complicated and time-consuming. In another previously proposed arrangement, the marginal region of the material of the brush element is pressed through a plastic frame against the edge of a plastic base plate and is thus held. A third plastic part is then applied on the side remote from the brush element.
  • a brush consisting of plastic parts, the cost of making the brush increases with the number of structural parts.
  • the invention consists of a textile brush comprising a base plate having a surface supporting a shallow flexible brush insert, the base plate having an elevated rim extending away from the said surface, the rim being formed with teeth over which a marginal region of the brush insert is folded, a cover part being provided which has ribs projecting from the inside of its side walls, the ribs being staggered relative. to the said teeth, the ribs engaging in the gaps between the teeth and serving to press the folded over marginal region of the brush insert against the said rim, the sidewalls of the cover part serving to press the brush insert from the outside against the said rim.
  • the tips of the teeth at the edge of the elevated rim of the base plate are slightly curved outwardly.
  • the edge of the elevated rim of the base plate is provided with teeth overits entire periphery.
  • a material with straight bristles or bristles lying at an inclination such material being adhesively bonded onto a cushion backing of foam material.
  • FIG. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a brush of the invention
  • FIG. 2 is a diagrammatic sectional illustration along lines 2-2 of FIG. 1, on a larger scale than FIG. 1, showing the manner in wich the brush insert is clamped;
  • FIG. 3 is a view in perspective of the base plate.
  • the manner of clamping the brush insert enables a brush to be composed of only two rigid parts in addition to the brush insert, the assembly requiring only very few manual operations.
  • a base plate 1 preferably made of plastic material
  • the second rigid part also preferably made of plastic material, is a cover shaped upper part 6 the side walls 7 of which are provided at their inner periphery with projecting ribs 8 disposed in generally radial vertical planes. These ribs 8 are relatively wide and are arranged staggered in relation to the teeth 3 of the base plate 1, so that they engage in the tooth gaps 3a when both parts 1 and 6 are assembled, as shown in FIG. 2.
  • a shallow flexible brush element or insert is used. If there is provided for the body of this element a material 5 having bristles, this is adhesively bonded onto a foam padding 4. In this manner the brush material is disposed, together with the foam padding, over the edges of teeth 3 of the base plate 1.
  • the bristles may be straight, that is to say, perpendicular to the general plane of the material, or they may lie at an inclination to such plane.
  • the padded brush element lies in the usual manner on the base plate 1 and its peripheral margin is disposed over the elevated rim 2 and over the teeth 3 at the edge of the base plate.
  • FIG. 2 diagrammatically illustrates this.
  • the side walls 7 of the upper part 6 are telescoped over the elevated rim 2 ofthe base plate 1 and hold the interposed brush element 4, 5 firmly compressed therebetween.
  • Assembly is effected in a simple manner.
  • the brush element 5 adhesively bonded onto the foam padding 4 is inserted in a correspondingly dimensioned assembly retainer with the bristle side downwardly, and the base plate 1 is applied onto its upper side.
  • the procedure cnabe such that the brush element 4, 5 is inserted together with thebase plate, into the assembly retainer. Since the open space of the assembly retainer is somewhat smaller than the outer-dimension of the elevated rim 2 of the base plate 1 when provided with the bonded brush element 4, 5 the foam padding is somewhat compressed at its margin so that its upper marginal section, naturally with the bondedbrush element 5, readily folds inwardly over the teeth 3 at the edge of the base plate 1.
  • the upper part 6 of the brush assembly is now moved downwardly from above, and its ribs 8 automatically press the brush element over the teeth and into the tooth gaps.
  • the side walls 7 of the upper part 6 engage agaisnt the brush element from the outside and press this against the elevated rim 2 of the base plate 1.
  • one or more interfitting sleeves and counter sleeves may be provided on the parts 1 and 9.
  • two sleeves 10, 10a extend inwardly from the lower side of the cover plate 9 of the upper part 6 of the brush, sleeves 10, 10a accurately engaging sleeves 11 and Ila which are upwardly directed from the base plate 1, by telescoping over them.
  • the interlocking of the two brush parts can, however, alternatively take place in any other suitable manner.
  • a textile brush comprising a base plate having a bottom surface supporting a shallow flexible brush insert, the base plate having an elevated rim extending upwardly away from the said bottom surface, the rim being formed with circumferentially spaced teeth over which a marginal region of the brush insert is folded, a cup-shaped cover part having an upper plate and a depending side wall which has ribs projecting from its inner surface, said ribs being arranged staggered relative to the said teeth, the ribs engaging in the gaps between the teeth and serving to press the folded over marginal region of the brush insert against the said rim, the side wall of the cover part being telescoped over the rim and the folded marginal region of the insert, and compressing such marginal region of the brush insert inwardly against the said rim.
  • a brush as claimed in claim 1 wherein the teeth are upstanding and the tips of the teeth at the edge of the elevated rim of the base plate are slightly outwardly curved.
  • a brush as claimed in claim 1, wherein the brush insert is composed of a material with bristles, the material being adhesively bonded onto a cushion backing of foam material.
  • a brush as claimed in claim 2 wherein the edge of the elevated rim of the base plate is provided with teeth over the entire periphery of such rim.
  • a brush as claimed in claim 2, wherein the brush insert is composed of a material with bristles, the material being adhesively bonded onto a cushion backing of foam material.
  • a brush as claimed in claim 3, wherein the brush insert is composed of a material with bristles, the material being adhesively bonded onto a cushion backing of foam material.
