Claims. (Cl. 15-209) This invention relates to a new and improved powder puff.
This application is a continuation in part of application Serial No. 147,012, filed March 1, 1950, and now Patent No. 2,672,178, for l lethod and Machine for Making Powder Puffs.
It is well-known to make a powder puff which has one or more parts which are made of pile material, with the fibers of the pile material exposed.
The invention is explained with reference to a powder puif which has two identical body members or casing members made of pile material, with an intermediate inner layer or filler, although the invention is not limited to this embodiment.
It is a principal object of this invention to provide a superior powder puff which is well adapted to be manufactured by the method and apparatus of the above identified patent application.
Other objects and advantages and features of this invention are disclosed in the annexed description and drawings which disclose preferred embodiments of the invention.

Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 44 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view similar to Figs. 3 and 4, and illustrating another slightly modified form of the present invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, and specifically to Figs. 1 and 3 thereof, the embodiment of the invention illustrated therein comprises a pair of subsfantlally identical casing members and 11, and an intermediate filler 12. While the casing members and filler layer are illustrated as being circular or disc shaped, it is appreciated that other desired configurations are equally well adapted for use in the present invention.
Each of the casing members 10 and 11 has a face body portion which has a peripherally extending, inwardly folded or inturned tab or edge portion or rim, 13 and 14, respectively, which abuts against the inner face of the respective casing member. The casing members 10 and 11 are arranged in spaced relation with their inturned tabs or rims 13 and 14 facing toward each other and secured together at the inner faces of said tabs 13 and 14, as by an adhesive 15 adjacent to and spaced inwardly from the bounding edges or folds of the inturned tabs.
While it is preferred to form the casing members 10 and 11 of pile material, with the pile fibers exposed, which is conventional in powder pulf construction, it is appreciated that other suitable materials may also be used without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention. been illustrated and described as being substantially identicalin structure, it is understood that such identity is not essential. For example, one of the casing members may be formed without an inturned rim, and adhesively secured directly to the inturned rim of the other body part.
The filler 12 is formed advantageously of a disc-shaped layer of any suitable filler material, and has its peripheral edge portion 16 of reduced cross section or thickness and tapering outwardly between the inturned tabs 13- and 14. While the filler edge portion 16 is preferably compressed during manufacture to effect its reduction in thickness, it is appreciated that the edge portion may be shaped initially of decreased thickness or cross section, and thereby require less compression during assembly of the powder pufi parts. The filler 12 is thus firmly held in position, and its edge portion 16 is compressed and clamped between the tabs 13 and 14, whereby a highly flexible, but resilient puff is produced which is soft in use and retains its shape for a long period of time. The edge of the filler 12 is spaced inwardly from the annular layer of adhesive 15 and from the fold-lines of the casing members and their tabs.
In Figs. 2 and 4, is shown a powder puff substantially identical to that of Figs. 1 and 2, but with the addition of a ribbon 17 to facilitate handling of the pulf.
The ribbon includes a flexible strip extending, preferably diametrically across the outer face of one casing member 10. The strip has its end portions 18 bent inwardly and engaging the outer surface of the inturned tab or rim 13. Thus, the ribbon ends extend inwardly between the secured tabs or rim portions and may be adhesively attached thereto. The ribbon ends extend further inwardly between the compressed filler edge portion 16 and the tab or rim 13, and are clamped therebetween during assembly of the putt parts. Hence, the ribbon 17 has its ends firmly anchored to opposite portions of the puff, preferably by both adhesive means and clamping action. Of course, the ribbon may be arranged otherwise, if desired.
In Fig. 5 is shown another slightly modified powder puff, wherein the disc-shaped filler layer 12 is of smaller diameter than that of the above described forms. More particularly, the peripheral or bounding edge 19 of the filler piece 12 is disposed radially inwardly of and adjacent to the inner edges of the tabs or rims 13 and 14. Hence, the outwardly tapering edge portion 16 of the forms of Figs. 3 and 4, and compression thereof, are eliminated. It has been found that the structure of Fig. 5, wherein the filler layer is slightly compressed during manufacture, is admirably well adapted to provide a flexible and shape retaining powder puff. I have thus provided, in each embodiment, two casing members iii and 11 which have body portions, each said body portion having an inwardly folded rim- member 13 or 14, which is integral with the respective body portion along a continuous peripheral fold line. Each rim member 13 or 14 has a face which is adjacent to and which abuts the entire respective part of the inner face of the respective body portion. The proximate faces of said rim members 13 and 14 are spaced from each other, save at the layer of adhesive 15, which is spaced inwardly from said fold lines and which is spaced outwardly from the inner edges of said rim-members. In each embodiment, the filler member 12 or 12 is spaced inwardly from said layer of adhesive 15, to provide an unfilled and peripherally continuous space between the rim members, in which the puff consists only of the material of the casing members, thus providing maximum flexibility. In Fig. 5, the edge of the filler 12' substantially abuts the inner edges of the rim members 13 and 14, so that the unfilled space is located substantially between the entire rim members.
While preferred embodiments of the invention have been disclosed, it is understood that numerous changes, omissions, additions and substitutions can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
What is claimed is: H

A powder pufi which has two flexible casing" members and a filler pad which abuts only parts of the inner faces of said casing members, each said casing member being integral with a respectively inwardly folded rimmembcr along a respective peripheral fold line, each said rim-member having a respective rim-face which abuts the respective adjacent part of the inner face of the respective casing member, said rim-members having proximate faces and inner rim-member edges, said proximate faces being connected to each other by a layer of adhesive which is spaced from said inner rim-member edges, said filler pad having a filler-edge which is spaced inwardly from said fold lines and from said layer of adhesive, said puff having an unfilled space between said layer of adhesive and said filler-edge, said proximate faces being spaced from each other at said unfilled space, said puff having maximum flexibility at said unfilled space, said filler abutting substantially the entire inner faces of 4 c said casing members inwardly of said rim member edges, said filler being a solid pad and of greater rigidity than said casing members.
2. A pufi according to claim 1 in which said layer of adhesive is spaced inwardly from said fold lines.
3. A pufi according to claim 1 in which said filler-edge substantially abuts said rim-member edges.

A puff according to claim 1 in which said layer of adhesive is spaced inwardly from said fold lines and said filler-edge substantially abuts said rim-member edges. s5; Apuffaccording to claim 1 in which a part of said filler extends between and abuts respective parts of said proximate faces,'said part of said filler being of less thickness than the part of said filler which is located inwardly of said rim-member edges.
