Description

(Nomad.) Q LINDBR.
POST HOLE AUGER.
M 374,260l Patented Dec. 6, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CHARLES LINDER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
POST-HOLE AUGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,260, dated December 6, 1887.
Application tiled August 2, 1887. Serial No. 245,953.
To @ZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that l, CHARLES LINDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kan sas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Post-Hole Angers, of which the following is a specieation.
My invention relates to an improvcmentin post-hole angers; and it consists in the peculiar combination and arrangement of the parts thereof, which will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and pointed ont in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved post-hole digger. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the main blade.
A indicates the stock, and'B the handle.
C indicates the boring-disk, which is provided with an opening, c, the opposing edges of which are respectively formed with an upward-beveled edge, c, and an auger-point or boringspiral c. Upon the opposite side of the top surface of the said disk C an extension blade or reamer is mounted. This latter device consists, esscntially,of a metallic strip, D, having its outer end, d, enlarged and bent upward, and one edge of which is formed with a cuttingedge, d'. Metallic clips or guides D are mounted over the main extension of the strip D, and by means of which it will be guided in its radial adjustment. By using this device inconneetion with the disk C any size of hole may be bored, by adjusting the saine as above set forth.
E indicates the main blade, which consists, essentially, of a strip of metal having its outer edge, e, curved to conform to the peripheral curvature of the disk C. This bladefis secured to the top portion of the disk by any suitable means, preferably by bolts e', passing through holes e in one edge thereof and through the blade C. If desired, however, the said plate E may be secured by welding or in any other (No model.)
manner. The plate E is constructed of -sheet metal, and is adjustable by bending the same up or down. The opening e is covered by the said plate E, and by the use thereof dierent vice being obviously apparent and appreciable, it is unnecessary to further enlarge upon the same herein.
`Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the disk C, having the opening c therein, one edge of which is provided with the downward-bent point c", and the plate E, stationarily secured to the opposite side of the opening c and adapted to be bent up or down, as desired, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the disk C, having the opening c therein, one edge of which is formed with a downwardly-projecting point, e2, the plate E, stationarily secured to the opposite side of the opening c and adapted to be bent upward or downward, as desired, and the reamer D, consisting of the enlarged np wardly-bent end d, having an integral shank adjustably mounted in guides D, secured to the top of the plate, lsubstantially as described.
3. The combination, with the plate C, of the radially-adj ustable reamer D, consisting of the outer enlarged upwardly-bent cutter, d, having an integrally-formed shank mounted and adjustable in the clips D', secured to the top of the said plate C, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES LlNDER.
Witnesses JAMES W. PERKINS, AMELIA HOFFMANN.
