BALANCE-SWING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,206, dated December 6, 1887.

Application filed May 25, 1887. Serial No. 239,3l4.

Beit known that I, CHARLES ScHwAGER, ot' Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BalanceSwings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of my invention is to provide a balance-swing .arranged and constructed in such a manner that persons of different size and weight may occupy my device at one and the same time, and while so doing remain in a balanced condition. I accomplish this ob ject by means of the device described in this specification, and illustrated in the drawings led herewith and made a part hereof, and in which similar letters of reference relate to similar parts of my invention.

In the drawings, Figure l is a side View of my balanceswing. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of Fig. l. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail sections of parts of my device, hereinafter more fully described.

In Fig. l, a is a stool or supportingframe for my balance-swing.

b is a center pivot, the under end of which turns loosely7 in socket c of stool c. The upper end of said pivot is attened, and forms, with bolt d and straps c and e, a hinge-joint.

f is a cap provided with a center opening, through which the center pivot, c, is loosely made, to pass, and serves the purpose of keeping said pivot c in a vertical position.

q is a balance-beam,f1rn1ly secured at its central portion in the upper part of the fork formed by the straps e and e', as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

g and g are extending bars, provided on one end with clamps h and tf, firmly fastened on the upper end to the extending bars g and g2, and on the lower end loosely fitting around the beam g.

bars g and g2 in any desired position. On the other outer end ofthe ext-ending bars gg2 are mounted the seats 7a and k', fastened to the extending bars g and g2 by means of swivel and knuckle joint, as shown in Fig. 4.

Z Z are handles fastened on top of the cxtendiug bars, and serve as safety-guards for persons using my device.

The advantages I derive'in using my device as a balanceswing are as follows: By applying a hinge-joint and center pin in combination as a fulcrum-point to a balance-swing I am not alone enabled to use my swing in an up and downward motion, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. l, but I can also turn the swing around its axis in a horizontal motion, as shown in Fig. 3 by the dotted lines. The same motions relate to the sears k and lo', as the construction ot' the connect-ions to the extension-bars g and g2 is similar to the center connection of bar g,- hence the seats can turn on their axes or swivels, and also maintain a horizontal position when occupied by persons.

The extending bars g g2 may be moved to and from the fulcrum for the purpose of equalizing the difference in weightof persons using the balance-swing.

Having thus described my invention, its advantages, and use, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a balance-swing, the combination ot' beam g with extending bars gg2, the clamps It h', setscrews z' i', handles Z l', and seats k It', mounted on swivel and hinge joints, all substantially as described.

2. In a balance swing, the beam g, clamps 7L h', handles Z Z', and seats k k', in combination with the center pin, c, and hinge-joint, all mounted on stool a, substantially as described.
