UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J GIACOMO DI GAETANO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,970, dated November 29, 1887.
A Application filed June 21, 1887. Serial No. 242,012. (No model.)
To aZZwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GIACOMO DI GAETANO, of the city, county, and Stateof New York,
have invented a new and Improved Window- Guard, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and practical guard to be applied to window-casings to obviate danger of falling in washing the outside of the windows from the window-sill, the said guard being adapted to be folded within the window-casing when not in use.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in allthe figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a windowcasing having my invention applied thereto, the guard being shown in folded position. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on the line 0000, Fig. 1, showing the guard forced outward in dotted lines; and Fig. 3 shows a modification in section on line :20 m, Fig. 1.
A A represent two side bars connected together by the top cross-bar, B, and the'intermediate cross-bar, 0, thus forming a rectangular frame. The side bars, A, are connected to the window-casing D by the connecting links or arms E E at the top and FF at the bottom. The links E F are pivoted to the casing and to the links E F, respectively, while the latter are pivoted to the side bars, A A, as shown clearly in the drawings, so that the frame may be folded within the Window-casing when not in use, as shown in Fig. 1, or forced outward to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, where it serves as a perfect safeguard to prevent a person from falling from the windowsill. When forced outward, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the lower ends of the side bars, A, rest upon the window-sill, and I prefer to make the upper links, E E, somewhat longer than the lower links, F F, so that the frame will not interfere wit-h a person washing the windows.
, In Fig. 3 I have shown theside bars, A.connected to the window casing by a single pair of'links at each side; but I prefer to use the double links, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The top bar, A, is provided with a catch, d, adapted to engage with the window-casing for holding the guard in closed position, as will be understood from Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The folding window-guard herein shown and described, the same consisting of the two side bars, A, connected together and provided with pivoted links, and adapted to be connected at top and bottom to the window-casing by thesaid pivoted links, the bars A being shorter than the window i casing and adapted to be folded within the same and extended for use, substantially as described.
2. The side bars, A A, connected together by cross-bars, and the pivoted links E E and FF at top and bottom ofthe bars, connecting the same to the window-frame, in combination with a broad window-sill for supporting the lower ends of the-side bars when the guard is extended for use, substantially as described.
,. GIACOMO DI GAETANO.
