Vwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for opening l the doors o'f locomotive-furnaces; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts, fully set forth hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear view of an engine-cab, showing myoperating device attached thereto. tion of the same, showing the operating device in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the operating device, partlyin section, to show the construction thereof.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A` designates the door of the furnace, having the pivoted latch B thereon, of the ordinaryconstruction and arrangement, and O represents the floor of the cab. v
D represents a bracket secured to the under side of the door under the free end of the door, and the said bracket comprises the two parallel depending arms d d, secured together at the lower ends by the cross-bar E, and having the spindle F therebetween close to the door.
G represents a vertical arm 4notched at the upper end to fit `the latch of the door, and having the anglearm H on the lower end.
g represents a slot `in the vertical arm, adapted to receive the spindle F, and when the said spindle is in the upper end of the slot thenotch in the upper end of the arm G is below the catch b, (which is at the side of the furnaceopening,) in which the latch B engages to hold the door in the closed position.
It will be readily seen that if the arm G is raisedso that the spindle will be in the lower end of the slot g, the latch B will be raised out of engagement with the said catch, and the door would be free to swing open.
Thelower end of the angle-arm His rounded, and is so arranged that in order to press it forward it must slide over the cross-bar E, as the said bar is in the path thereof. Therefore when the attempt is made to press the lower end of the'arm H forward it slides over the Said bar E, and consequently raises the arm G,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal secthereby causing it to slide vertically on the spindle F until the latter is in the lower end of the slot g and the latch B raised out of engagement with the catch b. It will be seen that when the lower end ofthe arm H has passed over the bar E it will swing forward freely, and therefore if the pressure upon the said lower end is continued the upper end of the arm G will swing rearwardly, and the notchg in the upper end thereof being still in engagement with the end of the latch the door will be swung open. Thus a simply horizontal movement upon the lower end ofthe angle-arrn H will result in first avertical and then a rearward motion of the upper end of the arm G, thus accomplishing the unlatching andopening of the furnaceldoor.
I represents an angle-lever pivoted to the lunder side ofthe cab-Hoor in rear of the arm G, the vertical arm K of which is attached to the lower end of the arm H by means of the connecting-rod M, whileto the rear end ofthe horizontal arm L is pivoted the lower end of the pressure-bar N. The said pressure-bar passes through a small opening in the floor of the cab and projects at the upper end slightly above .the saine, and it will be readily seen that if the said bar is pressed vertically downward the angle-lever will transform the vertical motion into a horizontal motion at the lowei` end of the Vertical arnrK, which horizontal motion will loe conveyed by the connectingrod M to the lower end of the arm H.
AO designates a spring secured to the under side of the iioor of the cab and operating at the free end against the underside of the horizontal 'arm of the angle-lever, so that the latter is normally held close to the door of the cab.
It will be seen that when the arm L of the angle-lever is in a horizontal position thelower end of the arm H is in rear of the bar E, and consequently the arm G is in its lowered po sition. Therefore when the fireman desires to open the door of the furnace he simpl y presses with his foot upon the upper end of the pressudre-loar N and the lower end of the arm His pressed forwardly. The lower end strikes against the bar E and is raised, thus raising the bar G, which lifts the latch of the door and then throws the latter open.
When the door of the furnace is opened in the ordinary way by hand, much time is required to accomplish the same, and it must be left open until the fireman has placed the desired quantity of coal on the tire. This allows the outside air to considerably cool the tire and the lines of the boiler, and thus reduce the pressure of steam and consequently the spec of the engine.
lVhen my opening device isin use, the lireman may open the door to insert each shovelful, if desired, and close the same after inserting it, thus reducing greatly the time which the door stands open. Further, the door is more easily opened in this way than in the ordinary way. The pressure pin or rod is placed at about the point Where the reman stands to rake his lire or shovel coal thereon, audit will be readily seen that to simply press his foot upon the rod would occupy less time and is less trouble than to raise the latch and open the door in the ordinary manner.
Having thus described my invention, I clai1nl. The combination, with the door A, having the latch B thereon, of the lifting-arm G, having the notch g' in the upper end to receive the latch B, the said arm beingprovided with a slot to receive a spindle, the angle-1ever I, connected at one end by the bar M to the lower end of the arm G, and the pressurebar N attached to the other end of the lever, and adapted to be actuated for operating the lifting-bar and thereby opening the door, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the door A, having the latch B thereon, of the bracket D, having the cross-bar E, and the spindle F above the cross-bar, the lifting arm G, having a notch, g', in the upper end to engage the latch B, and the slot g, to receive the spindle F, the angle-arm H, formed on the lower end of the arm G and having its lower end rounded, the anglelever I, connecting-bar M between the lower arm of the lever and the lower end of the angle-arm H, the 'pressure-bar N, pivoted tothe other end of the angle-lever, and the spring O, to normally hold the said pressurehar inthe raised position, all arranged and operated substantially as and for the purpose specified.
