Between the door casing and the door are provided suitable connections so positioned locked against door opening movement. In the present embodiment, I' am illustrating such connections inthe form of a toggle whichisstraightened out, or horizontally positioned lby the closing of the door so as to afford a dead center lock against door opening movement, as this form of connection is a simple and very elicient one.
5 indicates a lever member pivotally coni nected at 6 to the upper part of the bracket 8 and having a transverse arm 7 extending therefrom adjacent its pivoted end, and itself pivotally connected to the piston rod 8 of the power cylinder 4i A second lever member 9, preferably formed onspaced bars 9a, is pivotally connected `at 10, to the free end of lever 5, and has its forward end pivotally mounted at 11, on a pivot stud 12, carried by a plate 13, rigidly secured to the forward edge of the door, the forward ends of thev bars 9a being preferably secured together at 14, with a filler washer 15 inserted therebetween. rFliese two lever components 9 and 5` are so figured that when the door reaches closed position, they are straightened out in horizontal alinement and be` cause of this alinement are on a dead center and are thereby locked against door opening movement. The force within the power cylinder 4 (which, for instance, may be a spring, acting against the piston,) Vis designed to normally actuate these lever connections to move the door to closed position.
In order to break the dead center lock of these toggle lever connections, and to move the door to open position against the force of the power cylinder,L I have provided the following mechanism. On the forward edge of. the door and above and preferably in substantial vertical alinement with the first plate 13, is a second plate 16 rigidly secured to the door and havingj a raised seat 17 formed thereon and an extension 18 dependingvtherefrom and forming a second seat. An operating handle 19 Vis pivotally mounted at its upper end on the raised seat 17 and is preferably offset somewhat below its pivoted end so as to aord a clearance between it and the second seat 18 and also below the face of the lever of the handle and the forward pivoted end of the lever member V9. Pivotally mounted at its upper end upon the second Vand depending seat 18 of the upper plate 16 is anarm 20 extending downwardly therefrom and provided adja cent its lower end with a cam s lot 21. A headed stud 22 extends between the bars 9L of the lever member 9 at apoint adjacent the forward pivoted endv thereof andan anti-friction roller 23 is jou-rnaled on this stud between said spaced bars-and is seated within the cam slot 2l of the arm 20 thereby forming anabutment engaged by the cam arm.. This arm 20 adjacent its upper end is provided with a laterally offset portion 24 having a 'curved slot 25 formed therein,
struck on an arc with the pivot point of said arm as a center'. Secured to the operating handle 19 and extending from its rear face is a headed stud 26 extending through and riding in this curved slot 25 and serving to retain the operating handle against displacement and in proper operative relation to the parts, so that it may Contact with a lixed abutment stud 27 carried by the lower plate 13.
vThe operation of the part-s described to break the toggle lock and open the door is as follows: Assuming that the door has been moved to closed position by the power cylinder -1 and that the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the operator grasps the handle 19 and moves it to the right. The stud 26, when the door is closed, is at the extreme rear end of the curved slot 25 so that it abuts against the adjacent surface of the arm 20. Movement of the operating handle toward the right will therefore move the arm 20 rearwardly and upwardly, the slotted portion 21 riding over the anti-friction roller 23 and by reason of its contour acting as a cam and raising the lever member 9, and through it the lever member 5 upwardly to effectively break the toggle lock and move the connected ends of these lever members somev distance upwardly before the operating handle comes in contact with the abutment stud 27. A continued pull on the handle will apply the force through the abutment stud to the door and move the door to open position again with a minimum of power by reason of the leverage secured through the connection of lever 5 to the piston rod 8 of the power cylinder. As the lever member 9 moves with the opening of the door, the curved slot 25, will move in an arc and ride over the headed stud 26, the arc of movement of the arm and of the curved slot being on the same center. When the door has been opened and it is desired to close the same, the operator merely releases the handle 19 whereupon the force in the power cylinder will actuate the toggle lever members to move the door to closed position, the pivoted arm 20 swinging downwardly and the parts returning to the position indicated in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2. The breaking of the toggle lock by the means described is quickly and effectively accomplished and with a minimum of power owing to the leverage secured byl the point of contact with the stud 26 with the arm 20, and to the cam action of the lower end of this arm on the antifriction roller 23 carried by the lever member 9.
l/Vhile it is preferable to provide the arm 20 with a lateral extension having a curved slot, and to retain the operating handle in a definite spaced relation to this arm by means of the headed stud 26, so that the parts will be prevented from moving out of coperative position, this can be dispensed with and the construction shown in Fig. 4 employed. This is accomplished by omitting the lateral extension at the upper end of the arm 2O and simply providing an operating handlev with a stud extending from its rear face and positioned to contact with the forward edge of the arm as the stud is moved to break the toggle. In Fig. 4, 16a designates the upper plate secured to the door and 19a an operating handle pivotally mounted at its upper end on a seat formed on said plate, this plate being provided with an extension 18a depending therefrom and an arm 20a being pivotally mounted at its upper end on such extension and being provided adjacent its lower end with a cam slot 21a. A stud 26a is secured to and extends from the rear face of the handle 19a and is located in line with the forward edge of the arm 20a. The operation of these parts is the same as has heretofore been described, the only difference being in the detailed points of construction mentioned.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that I have provided quick acting means having a limited free movement in the direction of door opening movement to break the lock of the door connections and operable by continued movement in the same direction to open the door.
The invention has been shown as embodied in a speciiic structure, but it is obvious that the same is susceptible of variation and modification within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I should add that while the toggle lever components and their connections are Iigured to so close the door as to be positioned at exactly the dead center horizontal alinement of the lever members, any possibility of further movement down and beyond the dead center line is prevented by reason of the engagement of the antifriction roller carried by the lever member with the abutment formed by the edge of the cam arm at the rear end of the slot therein, which abutment is, of course, Iigured to contact with the roller when the door reaches closed position and the levers are horizontally alined.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, in combination, a sliding door, an independent stationary abutment, movable connections between said door and abutment constructed and arranged as tobe so positioned by the closing of the door as to be locked against door opening movement, an operating handle carried by the door and movable relative thereto, and cam means controlled by said handle and operable by nannteK f movement thereof relative to the door to unlock said connections whereby said door may be moved to open position.
2. In a device of the character described, in combination, a sliding door, an independent stationary abutment, movable connections between said door and abutment, constructed and arranged as' to be so positioned by the closing of the door as to be locked against door opening movement, an operating handle carried by the door and movable relative thereto in the direction of door opening movement, a cam member carried by the door and controlled by said handle, and means whereby a continued movement of said handle in the direction of door opening operates said cam member to unlock said connections and moves said door to open position. i
3. In a device ot the character described, in combination, a sliding door, an independent stationary abutment, movable connections between said door and abutment, constructed and arranged as to be so positioned by the closing of the door as to be locked against door opening movement, an operating handle carried by the door and movable relative thereto, means controlled by said handle, including a cam coperating with said movable connections, whereby a continued movement of said handle in the same direction will unlock said connections and move said door to open position.

In a device of the character described, in combination, a slid-ing door, an independent stationary abutment, movable connections between said door and abutment constructed and arranged as to be so positioned by the closing of the door as to be locked thereby against door opening movement, means normally actuating said connections to move said door to closed position, and means controlled by said handle, including a cam cooperating with said movable connections, whereby a continued movement of said handle in the same direction will unlock said connections and will move said door to open position against the force of said closing means.
5. In a device ot the character described, in combination, a sliding door, an independent stationary abutment, toggle lever connections between said door and said stationary abutment constructed and arranged as to be so positioned by the closing of the door as to be locked against door opening movement, means normally actuating said lever connections to move said, door to closed position, an operating handle carried by said door and having a limited free movement relative thereto, a cam member controlled by said handle mounted on said door to cooperate with said toggle lever connections and movable relative to said door, and means whereby said limited movement of said handle relative to said door operates said cam member to move said toggle lever connections to unlocked position, and whereby a continued movement of said handle in the same direction will open said door.
6. In a device of the character described, in combination, a sliding door, an independent stationary abutment, toggle lever connections between said door and said stationary abutment constructed and arranged as to be so positioned by the closing ot the door as to be locked against door opening movement, means normally actuating said lever connections to move said door to closed position, an operating handle pivotally mounted on said door and having a limited free movement relative thereto, an arm' pivotally mounted on said door adjacent said handle and provided with cam means cooperating with said toggle lever connections, and means whereby a preliminary movement of said operating handle relative to said door will move said cam arm to break said toggle lock, and whereby further movement of said arm in the same direction will move said door to open position.
7 In a device of the character described, in combination, a sliding door, an independent stationary abutment, toggle lever connect-ions between said stationary abutment and said door constructed and arranged as to be so positioned by the closing of the door as to be locked against door opening movement, an abutment carried by the doorconnected toggle lever member, means normally actuating said lever connections to move said door to closed position,
an operating handle pivotally mounted on said door and having a limited free movement relative thereto, an arm pivotally mounted on said door adjacent thereto and `having a cam surface adapted to engage said lever abutment, a door carried-abutment positioned in the path of movement ofv said operating handle, and means whereby a continuous movement of said handle in the same direction operates said arm to engage its cam surface with said lever abutment to break said toggle lock and engages said door-carried abutment to move said door to open position against the force of said closing means.
8. In a device of the character described, in combination, a sliding door, an independent stationary abutment, toggle lever connections between said door and abutment constructed and arranged as to be so positioned by the closing of the door as-to be locked against door opening movement, means normally actuating said connections to move said door to closed position, an antitriction roller abutment carried by the doorconnected toggle lever member, an operating handle pivotally mounted on said door and having a limited free movement relative thereto, an arm pivotally mounted on said door adjacent said handle, and provided with a cam slot engaging said roller abutment, connecting means between said handle and arm providing limited relative free movement therebetween and retaining said parts in operative relation, a door-carried abutment positioned in the path of movement of said operating handle, and means whereby a continuous movement of said handle in the same direction, operates said arm to move its cam relative to said roller abutment to thereby break said toggle lock, and engages said doorcarried abutment to move said door to open position against the force of said closing means.
9. In a device of the character described,
in combination, a sliding door, an independent stationary abutment, toggle lever connections between said door and saidstationary abutment constructed and arranged as to be so positioned by the closing of the door as to be locked against door opening movement, means normally actuating said lever connections to move said door to closed position, an operating handle carried by said door and having a limited free move ment relative thereto, a cam member controlled by said handle mounted on said door to cooperate with a toggle lever connection and movable relative to said door, an abutment carried by said cam member, said abutment being positioned on said cam member to engage a toggle lever connection when the door reaches closed position and thereby prevent movement of said lever members beyond locking position, and means whereby said limited movement of said handle relative to said door operates said cam member connected toggle lever member, an operat- M ing handle pivotally mounted on said door and having a limited free movement relative thereto, an arm pivotally mounted on said door adjacent said handle, and provided with a cam slot engaging said roller abutment, said slot being of such length that the arm at one end of said slot engages said roller abutment when the door vcloses and thereby prevents movement of said toggle lever members beyond locking position, a door-carried abutment positioned in the path of movement of said operating handle, and means whereby a continuous movement of said handle in the same direction operates said arm to move its cam relative to said roller abutment to thereby break said toggle lock, and engages said doorcarried abutf HENRY G.
