PLOW.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WVALTER E. Home, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Roscoe, in the county of Edmunds and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows and more particularly to a plow attachment having means whereby the point or body of the plow will be automatically released when said plow is brought into contact with an unyielding obstruction in its path, there be ing means for automatically returning the plow point to its proper position relative to the beam and to its proper depth in the soil after passing over the obstruction, such elevation and return of the plow point being effected without interfering with the proper operation of the mechanism employed for adjusting the plow vertically.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

Fig. 4: is a side elevation of a portion of the beam and the pivoted sections in the positions assumed thereby when the plow share is elevated.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a beam having its rear end portion reduced transversely to form a tongue 2 which projects between parallel arms 3 extending forwardly from a shiftable beam section 1 the rear end portion of which is slotted as at 5, to receive the head 6 of a standard 7 to which the plow share 8 is connected. Said head 6 is pivotally mounted within the slot 5, as shown at 9 and has a forwardly extending tongue 10 overhanging the beam section 1 and provided Specification of Letters Patent.

with a stop screw 11 which can be adjusted so as to vary the angle of the standard 7 to the beam section 4:.
The rear end of the tongue 2 is cut away at its lower corner to form a recess 12 adapted to receive a roller 13 formed at one end of a plunger 14. The top of this recess is sloped slightly upward and backward. This plunger is mounted to slide within a recess 15 in the lower face of the beam section land is retained in the recess in any suitable manner, as by means of a plate 16. A spring 17 is interposed between the plunger 14 and the end wall of the recess 15 and serves to hold the roller 13 normally m'ojectcd beyond the open end of the recess. A stop pin 18 is arranged in the recess 15 and projects into a groove 19 in the plunger, this pin serving to limit the sliding movement of the plunger. When the roller 13 is seated in recess 12, the section t is held in alinement with the beam 1, downward movement of the section 1 relative to the beam being prevented by the ends of the arms 3 abutting against the shoulders formed at the front end of the tongue 2, as shown at 20. A lifting finger 21 is secured to one of the arms 3 close to the pivot bolt 22 which extends through the arms and the tongue 2 and this linger is normally located above the plane of the upper faces of beam 1 and section 1, as indicated by full lines in Fig. 1. One side of the beam 1 is cut away as at 23 so as to permit the finger 21 to swing downwardly when the section 1 is swung upwardly about the pivot 22.
Secured on the beam 1 at one side of the finger 21 is a longitudinally extending ratchet bar 24.- adaptcd, under certain condi tions, to be engaged by a pawl 25 pivotally connected to an arm 26 extending upwardly from the fulcrum 27 of a gage lever 28. This lever extends downwardly from the beam 1 at a point in front of the plow share 8 and may carry a gage wheel 29. An equalizer bar 30 is pivotally connected to the upper end of arm 26 and is pivotally and slid ably connected, at its upper end, to a rod 31 extending forwardly to a lever 32 to which it is pivotally connected. This lever is fulcrumed, as at 33, upon the front portion of beam 1 and carries a pawl 3 L adapted to engage a toothed segment 35 and thus hold. the lever 32 against movement.
A rod 30 is pivotally and slidably connected to the lower end of the equalizer bar 30 and pivoted to a bracket 37 mounted on the arms 3. Another bracket 38 is secured to the tongue 2 and extends downwardly therefrom and said tongue has a slot 89 above bracket 38. A rod 40 is connected, at its lower end, to the bracket 38 and is adapted to swing relative thereto, this'rod being extended throughthe slot 39 and being also extended slidably through the... bracket 37. A spring tl is mounted on rod- 40 and bears downwardly on bracket 37 and upwardly against an adjusting nut 42 engaging rod 40.

sudden jolt thus produced causes roller 13 to move back into recess 15 and thus release the section A. The forward motion of the beam 1 and other parts causes the section 4 to swing upwardly while the point remains in contact with the obstruction, and during this upward swinging motion of the section 4 bracket 37 is carried forward and causes the nut 36 on rod 36 to press on the equalizer bar 30 which is pivoted to arm 26. Said arm 26 will thus be swung forward and cause the gage wheel arm 28 to swing downwardly relative to the beam as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, thereby elevating the beam 1 by swinging it on its hinge connection with the structure in front of the beam and which has not been shown. During this movement pawl 25 shifts into engagement with the rack 21 and holds the arm 2'5 against movement relative to the beam 1 and, therefore, holds the beam 1 tilted upwardly and rearwardly. It is to be understood of course that this elevation of the rear end of beam 1 continues until after the point of the plow share has passed over the obstruction. As soon as the obstruction has been passed the spring 41 operates to bring the section 4 back to its position in alinement with beam 1 where upon plunger 14: reenters the recess 12. As

soon as section 4 comes in alinement with beam 1 the finger 21 lifts pawl 25 out of engagement with the ratchet bar 24, thereby As soon as arm 26 is released, the weight of the beam 1 and the parts connected thereto will cause said beam to lower and arm 26 will thus be free to swing backwardly relative to the beam, the equalizer bar 30, at the same time, moving along the rods 31 and 36 until it assumes its normal position thereon. Thus it will be seen that as the beam 1 is lowered in this manner the plow is brought back to its former depth in the soil and'the parts are reset soas to operate again in the manner hereinbefore described. 7
While the mechanism constituting the present invention has been shown and clescribed applied to one form of plow construction, it is to be understood that the location of the several parts can be {varied so as toadapt said part to plows of other constructions. Furthermore instead of using a gage wheel, any other suitable means may be employed to lift and hold the plow at a certain elevation and thus actuate the mechanism and accomplish the same result as that heretofore described, to wit, automatically lifting the plow and holding it V in elevated position until the plow share passes over the obstruction in the path thereof whereupon the parts will be automatically returned to their normal positions.
Although only a single rod 41 has been shown, it is tobe understood thattwo of these rods may be used if so desired.

A plow including a beam, a section pivotally connected thereto and movable upwardly relative to the beam, a plow share connected to and movable with said section, cooperating means upon the beam and section for normally holding the section in alinement with the beam, said means being shiftable to release the section when the share contacts with an unyielding obstruction, soil. engaging means supported in front of the share, means operated by the section when released, for bearing downwardly on said soil engaging means to elevate the beam and share, and means for automatically lowering the section and share upon passing over the obstruction.
5. A plow including a beam, a section pivotally connected thereto and movable upwardly relative to the beam, a plow share connected to and movable with said section, cooperating means upon the beam and section for normally holding the section in alinement with the beam, said means being shittable to release the section when the share contacts with an unyielding obstruction, soil engaging means supported in front of the share, means ope 'ated by the section when released, for hearing downwardly on said soil engaging means to elevate the beam and share, means for automatically lowering the section and share upon passing over the obstruction, means for automatically holding the soil engaging device against movement relative to the beam, when the beam is elevated, and means operated by the section when lowered for automatically releasing said soil engaging device.
6. The combination with a beam, of a section pivotally connected thereto and adapted to swing upwardly, a plow share connected to the section and adapted, when brought against an obstruction, to swing the section upwardly relative to the beam, means for normally holding the section in alinement with the beam, a soil engaging element pivotally connected to the beam in front of the share, and means operated by the section during its upward movement for shifting said element to elevate the beam during the elevation of the share.
7. The combination with a beam, of a section pivotally connected thereto and adapted to swing upwardly, a plow share connected to the section and adapted, when brought against an obstruction, to swing the section upwardly relative to the beam, means for normally holding the section in alinement with the beam, a soil engaging element pivotally connected to the beam in front of the share, means operated by the section during its upward movement for shifting said element: to elevate the beam during the elevation of the share, a ratchet bar upon the beam, a pawl movable with the soil engaging element for engaging said bar to lock the element against movement relative to the beam, and means operated by the share when gravitating to normal position after passing over the obstruction, for releasing the pawl from the ratchet bar and unlocking the soil engaging element.

The combination with a beam and a beam section hingedly connected thereto, of a share carried by said section and movable therewith, a beam elevating element extending downwardly from the beam and in front oi. the share, an equalizer bar connected to said element, means for transmitting motion from the section to the bar to actuate said element and elevate the beam when the share contacts with an obstruction, means for locking the elevated beam to the elevating element, said section and share being shi'l'table downwardly to normal position when the obstruction is passed, and means carried by said section for unlocking the actuating element when said section is returned to normal position relative to the beam.
