. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL R. MAHER, OF ZANESVILLE, OHIO.
BUNG.
S PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 373,592, dated November 22, 1887.
Application filed September 2, 1887. Serial No. 248,656.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, llIIOHAEL R. MAHER, of Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Bung, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the present invention is to provide at the bung-hole of a bucket, cask, tank, &c., an improved means for opening and closing said hole, which will be always in place, easy and effective in operation, and, while in itself most durable, will increase the durability of the vessel to which it is applied, all as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a front View of a vessel-such, for instance, as the tub surrounding an icecream freezer; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sec tion thereof on line 00 m, Fig. 1.
A represents a vessel provided with the bung-hole B, having bushing O, with outward flange D, by which, through screwsa or otherwise, the bushing is secured to the bucket.
E represents the bung, with a lug, b, by which, through the pin d, it is hung to earpiecesfof the bushing, thus being adapted for an inward and outward swing in relation to the bung-hole. The outer face of the bung, toward its edge opposite its pivoted portion, has a rabb'et, 9, formed therein, upon and against which, when it is closed, rests a flat plate, h, having lug Z, engaging by pivot m with ear-pieces n. The bung on its outer face is provided with a lug, p, and the plate h has a similar lug, q, opposite thereto, each with an eye, 1*, through which pass the angular end projections, s, at each end of a locking-bolt, t, one of said angular projections being in turn provided with an angular extension, at, to prevent detachment of the bolt it from the lugs s.
In the drawings two sets of fastening devices between the hinged bung and its overlapping plate are shown, making such attachment more certain, although in many instances one of such devices will suffice.
The bung-hole at its outer edge is provided (No model.)
with an annular rabbet, 11, within which is seated a washer or packing, w, of rubber or similar material, against which a portion of the flange bears.
It will be understood that the bushing in effect forms a portion of the tub, its use being most advantageous; yet such bushing is not absolutely necessary, as the parts for closing the bung-hole may be connected to their respective supports, which may be secured to or form a part of the tub proper. In either formation the tub is in no way injured at and about its bung-hole by the opening and closing thereof, as heretofore.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a vessel provided with a bung-hole, of a bung hinged thereto, provided with a lug, and a plate hinged to said vessel, provided with a lug and arranged to lie over and upon the hinged bung, and a locking-bolt engaging the lugs of the bung and plate, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, with a vessel provided with a bung-hole, of a bung hinged thereto, provided with a lug, 1), having an eye, and a plate hinged to said vessel, adapted to lie upon and over said hinged bung, provided with a lug, q, having an eye, and a cross-bar, t, provided with extensions 3 s, engaging said eyes, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with a vessel provided with a bunghole and a bushing thereto, of a bung hinged to said bushing, provided with a lug, and a plate hinged to said bushing, provided with a lug and arranged to lie over and upon said hinged bung, and a locking-bolt engaging the'lugs of the bung and plate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The combinatiomwith a vessel provided with a bung-hole and a bushing thereto, of a hung hinged to said bushing, provided with a lug, 19, having an eye, and a plate hinged to said bushing, adapted to lie upon and over said hinged bung, provided with a lug, q, having an eye, and a cross bar, t, provided with extensions s s, engaging said eyes, substantially as and for the purpose described.
ICO
and at one end thereof a, projection, u, all arranged for operation substantially as and for the purposes described.
MICHAEL R. MAHER.
