[57] ABSTRACT An elongated extension member for use in conjunc tion with and as an axial extension of a lettering pen handle, the base end of a compass arm and other drafting implements. The extension member includes an elongated body portion having similarly laterally offset opposite ends provided with aligned bores. One of the aligned bores is adapted to receive one end of a cylindrical connecting member and the other is adapted to receive a Leroy lettering pen for any one of a variety of cartridge ball-point pens as well as capillary type ink pen cartridges. The end of the cylindrical connecting member received in the first mentioned bore will be of a predetermined diameter and the other end of the cylindrical member may be of any one of a plurality of predetermined diameters such as 3, 3.5 or 4 millimeters, these diameters being compatible with a substantial majority of the end bore diameters of various types of drafting implements with which the support bracket may be used.

n 42 v '22 George W .Sfreander INVENTOR 1 2a LETTERING PEN SUPPORT BRACKET FOR BOW PEN SHANK The main object of this invention is to provide a support bracket for Leroy lettering pens, cartridge ballpoint pens and capillary type ink pen cartridges to be utilized in conjunction with various types of drafting implements.
Another object of this invention is to provide a support bracket capable of supporting the various associated pens to be utilized in conjunction therewith in a manner centered relative to the associated elongated body member of the drafting implement with which the support bracket is to be used.
A final object of this invention to be specifically enumerated herein is to provide a support bracket in accordance with the preceding objects which will conform to conventional forms of manufacture, be of simple construction and easy to use so as to provide a device that will be economically feasible, long lasting and relatively trouble free in operation.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a first form of the support bracket illustrated supporting a Leroy lettering pen and carried by one end of a lettering pen handle;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 2-2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the support bracket;
FIG. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 44 of FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is a side elevational view of the support bracket as supported from a drafting implement and with a cartridge pen supported from the support bracket;
FIG. 6 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 66 of FIG. 5;
FIG. 7 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 77 of FIG. 6;
FIG. 8 is a side elevational view of a modified form of support bracket; and
FIG. 9 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 9-9 of FIG. 8.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings the numeral 10 generally designates a drafting implement in the form of an elongated handle 12 which is generally cylindrical in configuration and includes a longitudinal central bore 14 opening endwise outwardly of its lower end. The lower end of the handle 12 is provided with a diametric slot 16 whereby a cylindrical member such as the upper cylindrical end portion 18 of a connecting member 20 may be frictionally retained in the outer end of the bore 14.
The connecting member 20 comprises an accessory for the support bracket of the instant invention which is referred to in general by the reference numeral 22. The
Inasmuch as the bore 14 is formed centrally in the body or handle 12 and the bores 30 and 32 are aligned, the lettering pen 34 has its tip 40 disposed on the center line of the handle 12 whereby the balance of the implement pen is maintained.
As may be seen from FIGS. 5 and 6 of the drawings a cartridge pen referred to in general by reference numeral 42 may also be supported from the support member 22 with the upper end 44 of the pen 42 projecting upwardly into the lower end of the bore 30 and the lower end 46 of the cartridge pen being frictionally retained in the bore 32. Of course, the point 48 of the cartridge pen 42 is centered relative to the longitudinal axis of the cartridge pen 42 and therefore the point 48 is disposed on the longitudinal center line of the associated handle 50 from which the support member 22 is supported in FIGS. 5 and 6. i With attention invited now more specifically to FIG. 8 of the drawings, there will be seen a second form of support member referred to in general by the reference numeral 22' and which includes substantially all of the structural features of the support member 22 and has its components corresponding to the components of the support member .22 designated by similar prime reference numerals. The support member 22 is substantially identical to the support member 22, except that the body 24' thereof is generally I-beam-shaped in cross section as may best be seen from FIG. 9 of the drawings. The body 24 includes a first cross flange 25 and a second arcuate cross flange 27 with the flanges 25 and 27 being interconnected by means of a center main web or bight portion 29. In all other respects, the support member 22 is structurally and operationally similar to the support member 22.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
I. In combination with an elongated drafting implement having a longitudinal bore opening endwise outwardly of one end thereof, an elongated extension member, said elongated member comprising an elongated main body having opposite end portions including integral similarly laterally outwardly projecting portions provided with aligned bores, said elongated member being free of portions thereof obstructing the area between said bores, an elongated connecting member having opposite cylindrical end portions, one
along a radius of and opening into the corresponding bore.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said elongated member, at said end portions including said outwardly projecting portions, are oblong in cross-sectional shape with the opposite ends of the oblong areas rounded.
4. The combination of claim 3 wherein said slot extends along a radius of the corresponding bore generally coinciding with the longitudinal center line of the corresponding oblong area.
