Description

J. HOEL'LER.
PENCIL SHARPENER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 22. I916.

. INVENTOR WHNESSES K'AA/L? 4/0/11 A JOSE]? HOELLER, 0F ALBIA, IOWA.
PENCIL-SHARPENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnr HOELLER, citizen of the United States, residing at Albia, in the county of Monroe and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
It is an object of this invention to provide a pencil sharpener adapted to be removably engaged with one end of the lead pencil so as to be immediately available for use in the event the pencil point becomes broken, and which embodies certain other useful and novel features of construction.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of a pencil showing my device applied to one end thereof.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the device showing the device applied to the pencil, the pencil being shown in elevation.
Fig. 3 is a sectional View upon the line 3 -3 of Fig. 2.
The numeral 1 indicates a cylindrical body portion having a conical bore 2 for the reception of the end of a pencil. A slot 3 is cut in the cylindrical body communicat ing with the-conical bore. As will be seen upon inspection of the drawings the metal of the body portion 1 is cut away at one side of the slot 3, as at 4:, to provide a cutting edge 5. By referring to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the conical inner wall is slightly hollowed out, as as 6, to obtain the desired angle of the cutting edge 5 with relation to the pencil to be sharpened. A socket 7 is formed in the upper end of the cylindrical body and is adapted to receive an eraser 8. The opposite or lower end of the cylindrical body is interiorly threaded, as at 9, for engagement with the threaded end of a tubular clip 10, the said clip being split a portion of its length upon either side thereof to provide for engagement with pencils of varying diameters. A ring 11 is adapted to be slipped down over the split portion of the clip to hold the same tightly in engagement with the pencil, the said ring being provided with a spring catch 12 for engaging the edge of a pocket.

placed on the broken end which may bethen sharpened at the leisure of the writer. To take the place of the usual eraser which is carried by the end of the pencil an eraser has been disposed in the end of said sharpener. It will be also noted that by means of the construction of the clip 10 that the same may be held tightly in engagement with pencils of various sizes, and that by means of a catch 12 the pencil may be retained against loss in a pocket.
While, it will be seen from the descrip tion taken in connection with the drawings, that I have provlded a device clearly effieient and operable for the purpose described, I do not claim the exact construction shown thereimbut reserve the right to make certain minor changes and alterations as will not depart from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A pencil sharpener, comprising a solid body of cylindrical form having an aipial conical bore, and having a longitudinal slot in a side terminating a distance from each end of the body, said slot being radialand leading into the conical bore and having a wall cut away to provide a cutting edge, the wall of the conical bore having a portion adjacent the longitudinal slot hollowed out to give proi'ninence to the cutting edge.
' In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
