Y T. LISTER. FASTENER FOR THE MEETING RAILS OP SASHES.
PatentedNov. 15, 1887.
N. PETERS Phalo-Lilhograpllnr. Walllinglnn. u. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. LISTER, OF CLEVELAND, ,OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE CHAMPION SAFETY LOCK AND NOVELTY COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
FASTENER FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,143, dated November 15, 1887.
Application filed June 9, 1887. Serial Nth 240,720. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known'that I, JOHN T. LISTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same;
My invention relates to sash-looks; and the object is to provide a lock which will draw and lock together the meeting-rails of the upper and lower sashes of a window and at the same time and by the same means raise the upper sash to its place in the frame or casing, thus both locking the sashes together and preventing them from being. opened except from the inside and keeping them from rattling.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter de-- scribed, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of the device with all the parts in working position. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section on line x at, Fig. 1. Fig. 3.is a bottom view of the shell or casing shown at the left of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the part that is attached to'the upper sash. Fig. 5 is a detail of the eccentric cam locking plate. Fig. 6 is a view of operating-spindle and actuating-lever. Fig. 7 is a vertical central section of a slightly different form of device.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 3, A represents'a shell or casing, provided with an opening, a, for the edge and eccentric upon its inner edge, as is plainly apparent in Fig. 5, and will be seen by'comparing the points marked 1 and 2 with the center of rotation or angular hole b. In addition to this peculiarity the rib increases in vertical depth from the point 1 to point 2,
sash, and has a straight front edge, as shown at d, and a lip, 01, with a slightly-inclined and somewhat sharpened edge, so as to more easily and certainly make engagement with the locking-plate B.
When the parts are unlocked, the straight edges coincide and the sashes are free to be moved past each other. \Vhen they are locked, they are in position as shown most clearly in Fig. 2.
It will be observed that the plate B is limited to a horizontal rotary movement, and that its rib b is so constructed that it combines the functions of drawing and locking the sashes together, while it also raises the upper sash in relation to the lower sash, or depresses the lower sash if the upper one is in position and the lower one is not, thus locking the sashes in the frame and preventing noise by shaking.
Fig. 7 shows a modification of the device to this extent: A base-plate, A, supports the spindle, and the cam locking plate B is placed on the base-plate and rotated thereon, the spindle having its angular portion above and provided with a handle, as in the other form. The style of the handle is immaterial, and obvious changes in the structure may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a sash-lock, a locking-plate having an eccentric cam-shaped rib arranged along a portion of its edge and cut away on one side, when the parts are brought into engagement substantially as shown, an inclosing-oase corthe sashes are looked, substantially as set respondingly cut away on one side, and a forth.
spindle and handle for rotating the looking- JOHN T. LISTER. 5 plate, in combination with a locking-piece Vitnesses:
having a straight front edge and a curved H. T. FISHER,
groove and lip within said edge, whereby \VAI. M. MONROE.
