Abstract

A TEXTILE LOOM SWORD FOR USE IN A TEXTILE LOOM TO SUPPORT THE LOOM LAY AND CHARACTERIZED BY EASE IN REPLACEMENT IN THE EVENT OF BREAKAGE. THE SWORD COMPRISES AN ELONGATE BODY OF A PREDETERMINED CONFIGURATION FORMED FORM TWO MEMBERS HAVING MATING OPPOSITE ENDS FOR ASSEMBLY OF THE TWO MEMBERS INTO A UNITARY BODY, AND SHEAR BOLTS PASSING THROUGH THE MATING ENDS OF THE BODY MEMBERS FOR SECURING THE MEMBERS TOGETHER TO FORM A UNITARY BODY. THE SHEAR BOLTS ARE MORE EASILY BREAKABLE THAN THE BODY MEMBERS SO THAT WHEN EXCESSIVE FORCES ARE APPLIED TO THE LOOM SWORDS, THE SHEAR BOLTS WILL BREAK IN LIEU OF THE BODY MEMBERS.

TWO-PIECE TEXTILE LOOM SWORD Filed Aug. 12. 1971 United States Patent M U.S. Cl. 139188 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A textile loom sword for use in a textile loom to support the loom lay and characterized by ease in replacement in the event of breakage. The sword comprises an elongate body of a predetermined configuration formed from two members having mating opposite ends for assembly of the two members into a unitary body, and shear bolts passing through the mating ends of the body members for securing the members together to form a unitary body. The shear bolts are more easily breakable than the body members so that when excessive forces are applied to the loom sword, the shear bolts will break in lieu of the body members.
This invention relates to an improved textile loom sword and more particularly to a two-piece textile loom sword connected together by shear bolts.
Heretofore, textile loom swords used in textile looms to support the loom lay from the rocker shaft of the loom have been constructed of a single piece, unitary form. During operation of the textile loom, should any malfunction of the loom occur or should the loom come out of adjustment causing excessive forces to be applied to the loom swords, these swords would break in half. The loom swords are expensive pieces of equipment on the loom and require at least one to three hours of down-time or stoppage of the operation of the loom for removing the broken loom sword and replacing the sword with a new sword.
Accordingly, it is the object of this invention to provide an improved loom sword construction which will eliminate the expense of replacing the entire sword upon breakage and would facilitate replacement following breakage.
In accordance with this invention, the above object has been accomplished by providing a textile loom sword comprising an elongate body of a predetermined configuration in which the body comprises two separate members having mating means on opposite ends thereof for assembly of the two members into a unitary body. The sword further comprises shear bolt means passing through the mating means of the body members for securing the body members together to form a unitary body. The bolt means are more easily breakable than the body members so that when excessive forces are applied to the loom sword, the bolt members will break in lieu of the body members.
Preferably, the body members of the sword comprise substantially non-breakable ductile iron and the shear bolt means comprise breakable cast iron.
Some of the objects and advantages of this invention having been stated, other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring now to the drawings, there is illustrated in FIG. 1 a portion of a conventional textile loom in which textile loom swords, generally referred to by the reference numeral 10, are utilized. The remaining portions of a conventional textile loom are well known by those with ordinary skill in the art and full illustration and description of same is not deemed necessary herein.
The textile loom sword 10 of this invention is utilized in the conventional manner for supporting a textile loom lay 12 and a textile loom reed cap 13 from a rocker shaft 14 so that the loom lay 12 may be reciprocated back and forth and supported at the proper height and in the proper alignment to allow for the passage of a shuttle in the Weaving of fabric on the loom.
The improved textile loom sword 10 of this invention comprises an elongate body of a predetermined normal configuration for supporting the reed cap 13, the lay 12 and for being pivotally mounted on the rocker shaft 14. The elongate body 10 comprises two separate members 16 and 17 having mating flanges 18 and 19 extending from opposite ends, respectively. These flanges 18 and 19 are of less thickness than the members 16 and 17 of the body so that they may be assembled together in the manner illustrated in the drawings to form a unitary body.
The loom sword 10 further comprises a pair of shear bolts 20 and 21 which pass through suitable apertures in the flanges 18 and 19 of the members 16 and 17 and which may be used with nuts 22 and 23, respectively, for securing the members 16 and 17 together to form a unitary body and a unitary loom sword 10.
The bolts 20 and 21 are constructed of a material which is more easily breakable than the material utilized for the members 16 and 17 so that when excessive forces are applied to the loom sword through loom malfunctions or the lay becoming out of adjustment, the shear bolts 20 and 21 will break in lieu of the members 16 and 17 0f the loom sword 10.
Preferably, the members 16 and 17 of the loom sword 10 comprise substantially non-breakable ductile iron and the shear bolts 20 and 21 comprise breakable cast iron.
Thus, it may be seen, that when forces are applied to the textile loom sword 10 sufficient to normally break a conventional one piece textile loom sword, the shear bolts 20 and 21 of the improved loom sword 10 of this invention will break or shear leaving the body members 16 and 17 of the loom sword 10 intact. This will allow quick and easy repair of the loom sword by merely replacing the shear bolts 20 and 21 and prevent excessive cost involved in replacing an entire expensive loom sword and eliminate excessive down-time of the operation of the loom for effecting the repair following breakage.
In the drawings and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of this invention and, although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation.
