Description

UNITED sTATns PATENT Ormea JOSEPH' RIDGE, OF RICHMOND, INDIANA.
KEROSENE OR COAL-OIL LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 37,144, dated December 9, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH RIDGE, of Richmond, in the county of l/Vayne and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Lamp for Burning Kerosene or Coal-Oil; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specilication, in which- Figure l, is a perspective drawing of my invention. Fig. 2, is a representation of the diaphragm and cylinder.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in kerosene and coal oil lamps and is an improvement on the patent granted to me on the 15th day of April 1862.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Fig. l, is constructed with a short chimney C, a diaphragm D, a wick tube lw, and a frustum of a cylinder M, the diaphragm and cylinder being' both of one piece of glass forming the diaphragm and cylinder' united in one, as representeduall secured to an oil reservoir of any of the usual forms in the usual way and thus constituting a coal oil lamp embracing my improvement.
M, Fig. l, shows the cylinder; its base is metal perforated with holes 71 7L, h, for the admission of air. To the periphery of the base is attached a vertical metal rim B, lof an inch wide with three posts rising about an inch, supporting a metal rim l), constituting a frame, and support, and guard, for the said combined cylinder and diaphragm. By this combination a very short chimney only is required, to produce a perfect combustion, less heat is communi cated to the oil reservoir, more light in proportion to the oil consumed is obtained than in other lamp and all possibility of eXplosion is avoided.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent., is-
l. The diaphragm D, and cylinder M, united in one piece of glass, substantially as represented and constructed in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. I claim the said diaphragm and cylinder in combination with the base, and metallic frame, support and guard, and short chimney C, substantially in the manner and for the purpose, represented by the drawing and set forth in this specification.
