SAD-IRON HANDLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,215, dated October 11, 1887.

Application filed February 24, 1887. Serial No. 228,774. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, NATHAN L. POST, of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga, in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Iron Handles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained, and the best modein which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.

The object of my invention is to produce a sad-iron handle that may be formed separately from the body of the Sadiron, and which may be readily and securely attached thereto after the sadiron is in finished shape, and, further, to produce a handle that will be slightly elastic or springy under the hand of the operator.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents a longitudinal elevation of the sad-iron and handle attached in position, but with part of the handle broken away to show the lug to which the handle proper is attached. Fig. 3 represents a spiral coil of wire as prepared for a sad-iron handle. Fig. 2 represents a modification in which the spiral handle is attached to a rod or supporting-handle.

A is the body portion of the sad-iron, having cast integral with it the lugs O C. These lugs are provided immediately above their juncture with the iron with notches c c. in which the last coil, 0, of the spiral handleB is bent on either end to secure the same to the sad-iron proper.

In my modified form of construction the I spiral is placed only on the horizontal part of the iron rod D and is secured to it by bending tightly on it the last coil, 0, of the spiral.

I amaware that prior to my invention sadiron handles have been made in the form of an arch and of various materials; also,that they have been made hollow to secure a degree of coolness. I therefore do not claim as my invention either the arched form or the hollow handle; but

What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Ihe combination, with a sad-iron having lugs castintegral therewith. of ahandle formed of a straight coil of wire, the ends of said coil of wire engaging with said lugs, the length of the coil being considerably greater than the distance between said lugs, whereby the coil is caused to assume an arched form, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a sad iron provided with lugs cast integral therewith and projecting upwardly therefrom, said lugs provided with notches, of a handle made of acoutinuous coil of wire, the extremities of said handle engaging with the notches in said lugs.
