UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN HAERTEL, OF BRESLAU, GERMANY.
BED-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,193, dated October 11, 1887. 7
(No model.)
To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN HAERTEL, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Empire, residing at Breslan, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Pans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bed-pans for patients; and the object of my improvements is the simultaneous and sure catching up of both urine and excrement in the bed-pan.
' The bedpans commonly used as yet haveto be shoved under the patient when the latter is in a recumbent position; butin general they do not catch up the urine whether they be used by men or women. For that reason a urine-bottle with an opening of a suitable shape for the gcnitalsis given to the patients. It occasions much trouble to give the patients both bed-pan and urine'bottle at the same time, and in many cases it is even impossible; but the patient is obliged to discharge both alvine excrements and urine simultaneously, and for this reason bed-pan and urine-bottle are combined in the new construction and made out of one piece.
in the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a view from above; Fig. II, a section of the new bed-pan through the line M N, and Fig. III a front view of the bed-pan.
In this bed-pan a gutter-shaped projection, a, is applied to the bed-pan or vessel b in which the discharges are-collected. This gutter-shaped projection a, which is open at the side turned to the opening 71 of the vessel 1), encompasses the genitals completely, and consequently catches up the urine and conducts it into the vessel 1).
The projection a of the bed-pan is more tapered than the body b of the bed-pan, so that the projection serves not only as a convenient handle, but, owing to its peculiar shape, may be shoved between the legs of the patient without inconveniencing the latter.
A further peculiarity of this bed-pau consists therein that the seat cover b of the bedpan gradually runs off into the sides a of the gutter-shaped projection a. This peculiar shape of the parts just mentioned prevents the excrements and urine from escaping out of the bed-pan when the latter is in use, and, besides, greatly facilitates the emptying of the discharges through the top of the projection a.
When ithas to be used, the bed-pan with itsgutter-shaped projection a, the latter serving as a handle, is shoved between the legs of the recumbent patient so as to he in an almost vertical position to the belly of the patient. The vessel 1), with its opening 1', is then in an almost horizontal position. This enables the patient to discharge both excrement and urine into the bed-pan without anyhinderance. This new bed-pan catches up both kinds of discharges in a safe and reliable way without inconveniencing the patient in the least.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- In bed-pans, the vessel 1), provided with a Vertical gutter-shaped projection, a, forming a handle and being open from the top to the body of the vessel 1), and, secondly, with a cover-seat, 2/, running gradually off into the sides a of the projection a, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
