BED PAN.
No. 280,360. Patented July V3, 1883` N. PETERS. Phnwlumgnpmr. waxhingfm n. C.
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EANNIE DIcKINsoN, 0E oEIcAGo, IIQLINoIs.
BED-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,360, dated July 3, 1883.
.\ Application filed August 7,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FANNIE DIoKINsoN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Pans, of which the following, in connection with the accompany ing drawings, is a specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective representation of a bed-pan embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a section in the plane of the line x :v of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section in the plane of the line y g/'of Fig. 2, viewed in the direction indicated by the arrow there shown; and Fig. 4. is a sectional detail, 'showing the detachable nozzle.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
It is obvious that the means employed for treating patients hydropathically should be capable of being kept clean with facility, and that rusting should be avoided. It is also important that regard should be had for the comfort of the patient while being operated upon, and that unnecessary care and attention should not be demandedof the attendant or nurse. The purpose of my invention is to accomplish these desirable results, and to that end I employ the meanshereinafter specifically set forth as novel.
E is a bed-pan, which represents certain features of construction, which I employ for the purpose of accomplishing the purposes set forth above, and which I will now proceed to describe.
F is the chamber or basin, which receives the water or injection which leaves the patient.
This chamber has vertical'walls c and d. The
wall c, is curvilineal, and meets the wall o', which extends straight across the pan, and constitutes the back wall of the chamber-F. The wall c slopes upward as it leaves the wall c', or is higher in front than at the rear, as shown. G is a scoop-shaped ilange or seat having an opening corresponding to the chamber F. The flange or seat IG rests on the walls c and c', and extends only a little way forward of the wall c, but much beyond the wall c', as shown..
The wall c also 'extends around back of the wall c to support the backpart of the iiange v G. In other words, the contour of the flange or seat G is such as to iit and support the nates and back comfortably. The front part of the wall c is flush with the inner edge of that part of the ilange or seat G there supported by the said wall, as shown.
II H are discharge openings or nozzles-one in each side of the chamber F. These nozzles are screw-threaded to receive screw-caps df` d.
I is a metallic discharge-nozzle, screw-threaded for attachment to and removal from the nozzles II H, and I is a flexible discharge tube on the tube I. This tube I employ to drain the chamber F.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A bed-pan having therein a chamber, F, and provided with the annular scoop-shaped ilange or seat G, projecting laterally from the upper edges ofthe vertical walls of the said chamber, the forward part of the said flange being its highest and narrowest part, and the rear part being comparatively low and broad, and resting on the walls c and c', substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes specified.
2. A bed-pan having therein the chamber F, with a discharge on each side thereof, and provided with a scooped-face angular flange, G, constructed substantially as described, and supported on the walls c and c', the opening in the said flange substantially coinciding with the vertical walls of the said chamber, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A bed-pan provided with a dischargenozzle, in combination with a removable metallic tubular extension adapted for attachment to said nozzle, and also to receive aileXible discharge-pipe, for the purposes set forth.
