SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371.104, dated October 4-, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MILTON M. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle-Cases; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to needle and pin cases, and has for its object the production of a case which can be cheap] y and quickly constructed, and which at the same time can be used as an advertising medium.

The improvement consists in the production of a case composed, preferably, of a flat piece having a longitudinal groove in its side, in which is fastened astrip of felt or textile fabric or any suitable material for receiving and holding the pins and needles.

The improvement further consists in the novel features more fully hereinafter set forth, claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a plan view of a needle-case of my construction embodying my invention. Fig.2 is a longitudinal section on the line X X of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an end view; Fig. 4, an end view of a modified form; Fig. 5, an end view of another modified form, and Fig. (5 a further modification.

The needle and pin case is composed of a strip, A, which may be of any suitable material, wood being far preferable, owing to its lightness and the rapidity with which the cases can be constructed therefrom. The strip has a groove, a, in one of its sides, in which the piece of felt or textile fabric, 13, is secured at each end only, leaving the middle portion of the felt free, whereby the needles and pins can more readily be stuck therein or removed 45 therefrom. A margin is left on each side of the groove and on the hack of the case for the reception of an advertising medium.

The wood is cut into long strips, which in cross-section nearly conform to a cross section of the completed case. These strips are afterward passed through a planingmill, by which they are dressed down and have the groove or grooves formed therein at the same time, and are then cut up into the desired lengths.

The case may have a groove on opposite sides, as shown in Fig. 4., and may have sev' erahgroovrs in a single side, as shown in Fig. 6. Two of the pieces A may be hinged together, as shown in Fig. 5, with the grooved sides adjacent to each other.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

The herein shown and described needle and pin case, composed of the strip or piece having a groove in its side which extends the entire length of the piece, and a wide margin on each side of the groove, and a fabric seated in and secured upon the bottom of the groove,

substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
