UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN BEOHTOLD, OF LARUE, OHIO.
-FENCE==POST BASE.
QPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,850, dated October 4, 1887.
Application filed January 6, 1887. Serial No. 223,561. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN BEOHTOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Larue, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio,
support for fence-posts formed of clay and sand baked thoroughly in an oven or kiln; or the foundation may consist of cement, sand, lime, plaster-of-paris,'or other well-known materials that when united form a suitable and non-decaying pillar-base for fence-posts. For
cheaply making, common clay and sand are used, baked in an oven or kiln very hard.
Heretofore great difficulty has been experienced in holding fence-posts upright in the ground on account of the action of frosts, and, further, the rapid decay of Wooden posts and the rust and corrosion of iron in the ground necessitates the use of a more substantial pillar-base for fence-posts; and to this end is the object of'my invention. I attain this object by means of the peculiar construction and arrangement of the various parts of my device, which will be more fully pointed out and described in the specification and claim, reference being had to the drawing accompanying this application'and forming part of the same, in which the figure is a sectional elevation thereof.
Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a base formed of clay and sand and baked very hard in an oven or kiln in the usual way.
The base may be constructed of any suitable material, such as sand and clay, kaolin, or a concrete.
B represents a fence-post, of iron or other material, having any suitable means to secure wire or strips to said posts; or recesses may be formed in said posts for like purposes. The lower end of the post is rounded at bto fit a cup-shaped portion, 1), formed in the stop portion on the inside of the base E.
0 represents a base formed similar to pillarbase A, and designed to receive one end of a curved brace, D, the opposite end of said brace being connected to'the post B, the purpose of which is to stiffen and strengthen said post against wind force and the pressure of animals. Brace D is connected with post B by a screw bolt, rivet, or other suitable means, as shown in the figure.
E is an enlarged base-holder, which. is intended to support the post and brace above the ground. It is made of clay or analogous material having vertical openings for the reception of post and brace bases, and is also provided with an enlarged flaring base-flange, so as to insure a firm bearing upon the surface of the ground.
Suitable weather-proof packing is inserted between the post B and the inner surface of base A, such as lead, plaster-of-paris, 850.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1s- A post-holding device consisting of a base holder, E, having projections d and vertical reccsses c, burned clay'and sand bases A and C,
inserted in said recesses, an iron post, B, in serted in said base, and a curved brace, D, secured at one end to post 13, its opposite end secured in base 0, the post and brace being rigidly held by plaster-of-paris and lead packing, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTIAN BEOllTOLD.
