COMBINED PENCIL-HOLDER AND CIGAR-CUTTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,735, dated September 27, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, PAUL E. GoNoN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Pen-' oil-Holder and Cigar-Cutter, of which the fol-' lowing is a full, clear, and exact-description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device combining a pencilholder and a cigar-cutter.

The invention consists in the constructions and arrangements of parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement, showing the cigarcutter in section. Fig. 2 is an inverted sectional plan view of the same on the line :v of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of a cigar-cutter of modified form, and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 3 y of Fig. 3.

In one end of the metallic tube A is inserted a second metallic tube, B, in which is fastened a lead pencil, G, in any suitable manner. An annular projection, D, on the tube B prevents theflatter from entering too far into the tube A. On the other end of the tube A is held the cigar-cutter E, which operates in conjunction'with the aperture F, formed in the tube A, a suitable distance below the upper end.

The cutter E consists of the tube G, adapted to slide in the tube A and closed at its outer end, either by a metallic cap, as shown in Fig. 1, or by a rubber, H, asshown in Fig. 3. The inner end of the tube G is provided with a knife-edge, I, which is above the aperture F when the cutter is in its normal position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.

The tube G is provided with slots J, placed opposite each other, and into which project the lugs K, stamped out of the tube A and bent inward sufficiently to support in the tube G the disk L, on which rests one end of the coiled spring N, which has its other end abutting against the closed end of the said tube G.

It will be seen that the c'uttingtube G is held in place in the tube A by the lugs K, and the spring N holds the said cutting-tube G in its normal position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and also permits, in conjunction with the slots J, an inward movement of the said cuttingtube G, so that when a cigarend is inserted into the aperture F and the operator presses the tube G inward then the pointed end of the cigar is cut off by the knife-edge I of the tube G. As soon as the operator releases the pressure on the tube G, then the spring N forces the cutting-tube back to its normal position, as shown in the drawings.

In the modifications shown in Fig. 3, I use, instead of the projection K, a pin, 0, which passes through the slots J and is fastened in the tube A in any suitable manner. I can also dispense with the disk L, as one end of the spring N. rests on the said pin .0.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As a new article of manufacture, a combined pencil-holder and cigar-cutter, eonsisting of a tube having on one end an aperture for the insertion of a pointed cigar end, a cigar-outter adapted to slide over the said aperture in the said tube, and a pencil-holder held in the other end of the tube, substantially as described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a tube having an aperture for the insertion of a pointed cigar end, a cuttingtube adapted to slide over the said aperture in the said tube, a spring held in the said cutting-tube, and means, as described, for holding the cuttingtube in position in the said main tube, substantially as set forth.

3. As a new article of manufacture, the combination, with the tube A,having the aperture F and provided with the lugs K, of the cutting-tube G, having the slots J, thejdisk L, resting on the said lugs K, and the spring N, supported at one end on said disk L and abutting with its other end against the closed end of the tube G, substantially as shown and de scribed.
